Jonathan Van Ness is an American hairdresser, podcaster, and television personality from Quincy, Illinois, U.S. The Aveda Institute alumna is widely known for his role as the grooming expert on the Netflix series Queer Eye.

Ness is also popular for his work on the web series parody Gay of Thrones. He has also gained much popularity as a host on the podcast, Getting Curious with Jonathan Van Ness.  Van Ness attended the University of Arizona, majoring in political science. At Arizona, he became addicted to drugs, letting his grades fall and losing his cheerleading scholarship.

He then dropped out after one semester to pursue hairstyling. He trained at the Aveda Institute in Minneapolis. Van Ness worked in Arizona for five years after graduating and later moved to Los Angeles, California in 2009. In Los Angeles, he found a job as a personal assistant at Sally Hershberger Salon. Van Ness and Monique Northrop founded MoJoHair and Stile Salon, both in Los Angeles. They founded them at Arte Salon in New York City.

In a 2019 interview with The New York Times, Jonathan revealed a history of drug addiction issues, childhood sexual abuse and also his HIV-positive diagnosis at age 25. “I’ve had nightmares every night for the past three months because I’m scared to be this vulnerable with people,” he said. “There are issues that need to be talked about.” He shared the news ahead of the release of his memoir Over The Top released on 24 September 2019. In the memoir, Van Ness shares that he tested positive for HIV when he was 25, after fainting while working on a client’s hair, the Times reports.

Ness was born to Mary Winters and his father is Jon Van Ness. He was brought up in Quincy, Ill., a small port city along the Mississippi River, where he was a self-described “little baby queen” unafraid to embrace his femininity.

Her mother’s family owns Quincy Media, a media company that operates 16 television stations in Illinois, Wisconsin and elsewhere, and also two local newspapers. His mother is the company’s vice president, her father worked in sales. Jonathan’s parents divorced when he was 5, and his mother remarried four years later. His stepfather later died.

On 4th July 2019, Jonathan’s castmate on Queer Eye Antoni Porowski shared a snap of the two kissing. This sent the internet into a meltdown. Porowski captioned: “I guess Amurica’s birthday’s our anniversary, babe”. This prompted fans to ask whether the duo is dating.

Several days after the post, Ness shared that the entire thing was a prank. He also wrote on his own Instagram account: “It was all Antoni’s idea, but maybe someday we will fall in love @antoni #notacouplebutitwasfunright.”

Van Ness has hosted the weekly podcast Getting Curious with Jonathan Van Ness since 2015. It is a weekly exploration of all the things Ness is curious about. Ness discovered his passion for stand-up around the same time that Queer Eye became a media phenomenon in early 2018. Low-key sets at shows by comedian friends throughout that year led to his debut tour.

Jonathan was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Short Form Variety Series in 2018 for Gay of Thrones.

Van Ness joined Queer Eye, a reboot of the Bravo series Queer Eye for the Straight Guy. The Netflix original series features a new Fab Five: Antoni Porowski, food and wine expert; Tan France, fashion expert; Karamo Brown, culture expert; Bobby Berk, design expert; and Jonathan as a grooming expert.

The Fab Five sets out to positively impact people in need of lifestyle makeovers. The series was initially released on 7 February 2018 and released for a fourth season on July 19, 2019.

On 25 September 2019, Jonathan announced his endorsement of Elizabeth Warren for president in 2020 based upon healthcare being a human right.

Van Ness shared how he ended up paying $3500 in order to replace the medication. Jonathan tweeted, ‘The moment I knew I was endorsing @ewarren was last month when I misplaced my HIV meds. It cost $3500 to replace them out of pocket with ‘amazing’ platinum level insurance. Healthcare shouldn’t be for-profit ever, it’s a human right’.

The presidential hopeful then called the Queer Eye star and thanked him for endorsing her in the upcoming Democratic primary.
