Jonas Brodin is a professional Swedish ice hockey defenceman for the Minnesota Wild of the NHL (National Hockey League). He was drafted by the Wild 10th overall in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft.
Jonas Brodin Playing Career
Following two seasons with Farjestad BK of the Sweedish Elite League (SEL), he was selected by the Minnesota Wild 10th overall in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft. The Wild then signed him on July 12, 2011, to a three-year, entry-level contract. He went on and joined the Wild’s American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate, the Houston Aeros to begin the 2012-13 season. However, he suffered a broken clavicle on November 3, as a result of a hit from Oklahoma City Baron’s forward Taylor Hall. He then returned 12 weeks later.
On January 25, 2013, he made his debut for the Wild, recording his first career point (an assist) in a 5-3 loss to the Detroit Red Wings. On March 14, he scored his first NHL goal, on Semyon Varlamov of the Colorado Avalanche; his parents were in attendance to see it. He then led all first-year players in ice time and tallied two goals and nine assists for 11 points in his rookie season. Moreover, he was named to the NHL All-Rookie Team. During his sophomore season, he played in 79 games thus increasing his point total to 19. On October 12, 2014, the Wild signed him to a six-year contract, a $25 million contract. During the 2019-20 season, he had a career-high 28 points. On September 15, 2020, the Wild signed him to a seven-year, $42 million contract extension.
