Who is Jon Ossoff?

Jon Ossoff is an American politician who previously worked as an investigative journalist and a documentary film producer. He a United States Senator elected from Georgia. During the historically expensive 2017 special election for the 6th congressional district, Ossoff was the Democratic Party nominee. The 6th congressional district was a Republican stronghold.

However, though Ossoff emerged first, he lacked majority votes leading to a runoff in which he lost to Republican Karen Handle. This was one of the problematic federal elections that took place in the 2018 general election. Ossoff then won the nominations for the Democratic party for the U.S Senate election in Georgia to run against incumbent Republican Senator David Perdue. Therefore, Ossoff was to serve alongside Democrat Raphael Warnock who won against Republican Kelly Loeffler in the Senate Special election runoff that took part also on January 5, 2021. He became the youngest member of the Senate from Georgia 1996 in which the title belonged to Max Cleland. Ossoff and his fellow Democrat Warnock became the first Democratic U.S Senators from Georgia since 2005 when Zec Miller left office. For five years, Ossoff worked as a national staffer and aide to Hark Johnson who was a U.S Representative. In 2012, he went to London School of Economics leaving Johnson’s office. He previously worked as an intern for U.S Representative and civil rights leader John Lewis before working for Hark Johnson. In fact, It was Lewis who recommended Ossoff to Johnson. As of 2013, Ossoff has been working a the managing director and chief executive officer of Insight TWL which is an investigative television production company based in London. 2017 U.S. House election

On January 5, 2017, Ossoff announced his intention to run for Georgia’s 6th congressional party after learning that Republican Tom Price had been appointed Secretary of Health and Human Services. He quickly turned out to be the most viable candidate out of a big number of other candidates. In addition, he received endorsements from John Lewis and Hank Johnson as well as Stacey Abrams who was the Democratic leader. He also got support Bennie Sanders who was a U.S Senator and Democratic party presidential candidate. Ossoff raised a sum amount of $8.3 million by the start of April. In the 2020 Senate election in Georgia, Ossoff ran in the primary election for Democratic party nominee. He sought to take the place of incumbent Republican Senator David Perdue. He won the primary with 50.5% narrowly avoiding a runoff election and advancing to the general election. Ossoff has raised more than $100 million for his campaign making him the greatest funded senator candidate in the history of the U.S. During the general election held on 3rd November, Perdue got 2,462,617 votes which was 49.73% while Ossoff had 2,462,617 votes which were 47.95%. This meant that the two top candidates had not reached majority and would proceed to a runoff election on January 5 2021.

Ossoff announced his victory on January 6, 2021 morning while many of the media outlets called his race later in the day. Ossoff outran Perdue from his support from Atlanta’s inner ring despite Perdue winning more countries. The vote counts must be certified before the newly elected senators can be allowed to take office. The date of certification was estimated to be on 20th January despite expectations of taking more days. After Ossoff takes office, he will be the first Jewish senator from Georgia. In addition, with 33 years old, he will also be the youngest member of the chamber. Ossoff will also be the first elected Democrat to an entire 6-year term in the Senate from Georgia since Max Cleland who occupied the same seat as Ossoff from 1997 to 2003.
