Who Is John Suthers?

John Suther is an American politician and lawyer, serving as the mayor of Colorado Springs, Colorado. Prior to being Mayor, he served as the Attorney General of Colorado, U.S. Attorney for Colorado, Executive Director of the Colorado Department of Corrections. In addition, he also served as Fourth Judicial District Attorney. Moreover, he is a member of the Republican Party.


Early Career

Suthers worked as a deputy and chief deputy district attorney in Colorado Springs from 1977 to 1981. From 1979 to 1981, he led the district attorney’s office’s Economic Crime Division and co-wrote a book on consumer fraud and white-collar crime. Moreover, during his tenure as a municipal prosecutor, he handled crimes ranging from drunken driving to first-degree murder, and from shoplifting to robbery.

Suthers joined the Colorado Springs law firm, Sparks Dix, P.C. as a litigation partner in 1981. Moreover, he served with the law firm until 1988, when he defeated an incumbent to become the Fourth Judicial District’s elected district attorney. In 1994-1995, he was president of the Colorado District Attorneys Council.

John came back to Sparks Dix in 1997 as senior counsel as the head of the firm’s litigation division at the end of his second term. In 1998, he ran for Attorney General and was defeated 47.4% to 50% by Ken Salazar.

Suthers was appointed executive director of the Colorado Department of Corrections in January 1999 by Governor Bill Owens. As the director, he managed a department of 6,000 employees and an annual budget of more than $500 million.
