 Who is John Murphy?

John Murphy is a well-known American professional sportscaster from Buffalo, New York. Murphy is recognized as the voice of the Buffalo Bills Radio Network and host of One Bills Live (formerly The John Murphy Show) on WGR and MSG Western New York. He has also served as a commentator for the Buffalo Bisons, Canisius College Golden Griffins, Buffalo Bulls, and Niagara University Purple Eagles in the 1990s.

John Murphy Career

Broadcast career

John spent some of his early career at WLVL in his hometown of Lockport, calling high school sports contests. Murphy’s broadcast partner at WLVL, Frank Williams would go on to a long career as a play-by-play announcer himself, spending more than 30 years at WESB in Bradford, Pennsylvania. However, Williams never advanced past high school sports. Stan Barron the longtime sports director at WBEN, died from typhoid cancer in November 1984, briefly following calling the Bills’ last preseason game of the year. Barron’s short-notice demise led to John’s instant hiring. He initially served in all of the same capacities that Barron did.

He then served as sports director at WBEN from 1984 to 1992 and hosted a talk show on the station until 1995. Murphy succeeded Rick Azar as WKBW-TV’s 6 PM sports anchor, joining Irv Weinstein and Tom Jolls in Western New York’s most popular newscast in 1989. He was then named Sports Director in 1992, one year following the exit of Sports Director Bob Koshinski. Murphy held the role for 18 years, until September 2007, when he balked at taking a 20% pay cut, as other employees had done due to Granite Broadcasting’s financial problems.

John remained off television until his non-compete deal clause expired. Following this he joined WIVB-TV, WKBW’s crosstown rival in March 2008, to become that station’s sports director. He took the place of longtime sports director Dennis Williams in the role. John then left WIVB to focus full-time on his Bills duties in June 2012. He made a cameo in the movie Bruce Almighty, the only WKBW anchor to do so, during his time at WKBW.

Buffalo Bills

He serves as the play-by-play voice of the Buffalo Bills radio network, a role he has held since the retirement of Van Miller after the 2003 season. Murphy is well-recognized for his association with the Buffalo Bills. He served as the Bills’ color analyst, together with Miller from 1984 to 1989 and again from 1994 to 2003. Murphy then hosted The John Murphy Show, (later re-named One Bills Live), a Bills-themed talk show on WGR in Buffalo from 2012 to 2020. In May 2019, he was revealed as an inductee into the Buffalo Broadcasters Association’s Hall of Fame.
