Who Is John Hickenlooper?

John Hickenlooper ( John Wright Hickenlooper Jr.) is an American politician and businessman, currently, he is serving as the junior US Senator from Colorado since 2021. In addition, he is also a member of the
Democratic Party. In 2003 he became the mayor of Denver until 2011, after that he became the Governor of Colorado in 2011 until 2019.

Career

He began his career in the early 1980s as a geologist in Colorado for Buckhorn Petroleum. In October 1988, together with his five friends, they opened the Wynkoop Brewing Company after they raised the capital from friends and family, they also got some funding from the Denver economic development office loan.

In 2003 he decided to ran for the mayor of Denver. Where he was campaigning on his business experience. He went ahead and created series of creative television ads which made him look different from other opponents. John won the election and in July 2003 he assumed the office as the new 43rd Mayor for Denver. After taking over the office he announced a ten-year plan which was going to end homelessness in Denver.

In 2008, John was an executive member of the Denver 2008 convention host committee. He led the successful campaign for Denver to be able to host the 2008 Democratic National Convention. On January 6, 2010, Ritter confirmed that he was not going to seek re-election after his term ended. After this confirmation, John was appointed as the potential candidate to replace Ritter, however, he stated that if Salazar was going to run for the seat, he will not challenge him.

The following day, on January 7, Salazar announced that he was not going to run for the seat as the governor. After that, it was official that John was going to run for gubernatorial seat, and on August 5, 2010, he appointed Joseph a. Garcia as his running mate.

2010 Election

He was voted in as the new governor of Colorado, having 51% of the votes ahead of Tom Tancredo who was a former congressman with 36.4%. On January 11, 2011, he was sworn in as the 42nd governor of Colorado and 2nd Mayor of Denver to be elected as a governor.

On December 4, 2012, he was appointed to serve as a vice-chair of the Democratic Governors Association. In 2014 he won the gubernatorial seat with 49% of the vote against Bob Beauprez, a Republican candidate. Earlier he had been considered as the front-runner to take over the US Senate seat which was going to be vacated by Ken Salazar.

On August 22, 2019, he had announced that he was going to vie for a US Senate seat in 2020. June 30, 2020, he won the party primary nomination against Andrew Romanoff. After the primary, he went head to head with incumbent Republican Cory Gardner. He defeated Cory with 9 points assuming the office on January 3, 2021.
