Hargreaves dropped out of school at the age of 14 and joined the retail business at the age of 16. He then opened the first Matalan store in Preston in 1985. Currently, he has more than 200 stores in the UK, and hires, more than 16,000 people. Hargreaves then resigned as chairman of Matalan in November 2007, less than one year following taking the company private.
Legal issues
From March 2000, alleging non-residence in the UK, Hargreaves claimed that he was not liable to capital gains tax on a gain of £231 million arising on the disposal of Mataln shares in May 2000. The claim was resisted by Herr Majesty’s Revenue and Customs and the matter was litigated. He then accepted that he was not in fact non-resident in 2000/01 and his appeal was dismissed. That meant he could be liable to pay up to £135 million.
