John has published three books on the subject. Furthermore, in October 2013, he held a conference at his church called “Strange Fire” to celebrate the release of his book of the same title. A number of speakers spoke at the gathering, arguing for a cessationist religion and harshly criticizing the Charismatic Movement.
John calls it modern “visions revelations, voices from heaven…dreams speaking in tongue, prophecies, out-of-body experiences, a trip to heaven and anointing, miracle-all false, all lies, all deceptions-attributed falsely to the Holy Spirit. ”

Furthermore, he was a key person in the Lordship salvation controversy in the 1980s. Where he was arguing against free grace theology. John said that he must receive Jesus Christ for who he is, both Lord and Savior, to be truly saved (II Peter 2:20).” In terms of everlasting protection, he says, “It can never be presented that if you’re saved once, you’re saved forever, regardless of what you believe or do. Only all who continue to live holy lives will join the Lord’s presence, according to the author of Hebrews 12:14.”
His views raised controversy within U.S. evangelicalism and were challenged in print by non-lordship dispensationalist theologians Charles and Zane C. Hodges.
