John Travis Clayton was a famous American sports journalist who was a National Football League (NFL) writer and reporter for ESPN. Additionally, he was a senior writer for ESPN.com.

John Clayton career

Early career

John started covering sports while still at Churchill Area High School as a student. Beginning with the Pittsburgh Steelers’ 1972 training camp, he covered the team in twice-weekly dispatches in St. Mary’s, Pennsylvania Daily Press. Later, Clayton wrote for Steel City Sports, a weekly publication in Pittsburgh. Steel City Sports turned into Score! Pittsburgh in 1975, and he was a staff writer, covering the Steelers. Also, he worked as a stringer for a number of radio networks such as AP Radio and covered games. He provided the network with sound clips from locker room interviews following games involving Pittsburgh’s professional sports team.

In 1976, Clayton graduated from Duquesne University and then worked for The Pittsburgh Press. While attending college, he had done part-time work for the paper. John was sent to cover a Steelers mini-camp in May 1978, in place of the Press’s regular Steelers beat writer, Glenn Sheeley. He discovered and reported a rules violation which would later cost the team a draft pick while there. He dubbed the affair ”Shouldergate”, and he became persona non grata for a while in his hometown for his role in the affair.

John finally worked his way up to become the Steelers beat writer at the Press, prior to leaving the paper in 1986. He then moved across the country and started covering the Seattle Seahawks for The News Tribune in Tacoma, Washington, During this time he started appearing in NFL sections on Seattle sports radio station KJR (AM) on host Nanci Donnellan’s show ”The Fabulous Sports Babe”. After Donnellan’s program was chosen by ESPN for national syndication, John went along as an NFL correspondent.
