Joel Murray Biography

Joel Murray is an American actor who has had prominent roles in television series such as Mad Men, Grand, Love & War, Dharma and Greg, and Shameless.

Murray attended his high school at Loyola Academy, where he was captain of the football team and also the lead actor in one of the school’s musicals. Murray’s entertainment career began in Chicago, Illinois, where he then performed at various improvisational theaters which include the Improv Olympic, the Improv Institute, and The Second City.

Murray and his brothers own a country-club-themed restaurant, the Murray Brothers’ “Caddyshack” (run by his brother Andy). It is named after the 1980 comedy film which starred his brothers Bill and Brian. The restaurant is located in the World Golf Village resort near St. Augustine, FL.

Murray uses his free time writing, playing golf, and coaching his sons in baseball, volleyball, and basketball.

Murray was born to Lucille (née Collins), a mailroom clerk, and Edward Joseph Murray II, a lumber salesman. His parents are Irish-American and Catholic. Murray’s father died in 1967 at the age of 46 from complications of diabetes.

He was born one of nine siblings: John Murray, Brian Doyle-Murray, Bill Murray, Edward Murray III, Peggy Murray, Andy Murray, and Laura Murray.
