Who is Joe Scarborough?

Joe Scarborough is an American television host, attorney and a former politician who currently co-hosts MSNBC’s Morning Joe with his wife  Mika Brzezinski.  Before his current job, he hosted Scarborough Country still on MSNBC. Scarborough was also a former lawyer and politician serving in the U.S House of Representatives as a Republican for Florida’s 1st District from 1995 to 2001.

Scarborough was as well a visiting fellow at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government’s Harvard Institute of Politics. In 2011, Time 100 named him as one of the most influential people in the world.

Legal Career

Scarborough joined the Florida Bar in 1991 where he practised law in Pensacola. His biggest and highest-profile case was when he briefly represented Michael F. Griffin after he murdered David Gunn in 1993. Scarborough’s political career also elevated when he helped with a petition drive which opposed a proposed 65% increase in Pensacola’s property taxes in late 1993.

 

Political Career

Scarborough won the 1994 Republican primary elections for the position of Florida’s 1st congressional district. The seat became vacant when incumbent Earl Hutto announced his retirement after completing his eight terms. Scarborough defeated Pensacola Attorney Vince Whinns Jr who was Democratic Party’s candidate in the general elections. He won with 61% of the votes. Scarborough got reelected in 1996 with 72% of the votes and in 1998 and 2000 he only ran against write-in candidates. Scarborough received a 95% lifetime rating during his congressional career from the American Conservative Union. In addition, he also signed a contract with America.

He also served on the Judiciary, Armed Services and Education committees. Scarborough later became chairman of the Civil Service Committee in 1998. He was in fact, one of a group of about 40 Republican freshmen legislators who named themselves the New Federalists after The Federalist Papers. He was elected to be the political director of the new legislators. Scarborough also supported anti-abortion positions in congress including the Unborn Victims of Violence Act that made it a crime to harm an unborn fetus while committing other crimes.

Scarborough also supported a bill to force the withdrawal of the U.S from the United Nations after a four-year transition. In addition, he voted for the Corporation of Public Broadcasting to be self-sufficient through removing federal funding. While in congress, Scarborough got a number of awards including the “Guardian of Small Business Award”  from the National Federation of Independent Business. He also received the “Friend of the Taxpayer Award” from Americans for Tax Reform. In December 1998, he was one of the 228 members of the House who were involved in the voting to impeach Bill Clinton.

Resignation

Scarborough announced his intention to resign five months into his fourth term in May 2001 to spend more time with his children. After his resignation, a special election to replace Scarborough was held in October 2001. Later on, July 11, 2017, while on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Scarborough announced that he was becoming an independent and was leaving the Republican Party.

Media Career

While still in congress, Scarborough founded The Florida Sun in 1991 which was a free weekly Pensacola based newspaper. In 2001, the paper merged and is currently known as the Independent News. On leaving Congress, Scarborough became an environmental lawyer in Florida. Then in 2002, he received an appointment to the President’s Council on the 21st Century Workforce. Later in 2003, he started his television career by launching Scarborough Country on MSNBC. He then started hosting Morning Joe in May 2007.

Morning Joe

Scarborough was one of the rotating hosts auditioning for the vacated slot on MSNBC by Imus in the Morning in May 2007. In July 2007, Scarborough’s morning show won the slot.
