Who is Joe Manchin?

Joe Manchin (full name: Joseph Manchin III) is an American politician who is a member of the United States Senate from West Virginia. He has held the seat since November 15, 2010. As a member of the Democratic Party, Manchin served as the 34th governor of West Virginia from 2005 to 2010 and also previously the 27th secretary of state of West Virginia from 2001 to 2005.

Though West Virginia leans heavily Republican, Manchin is a moderate Democrat who has continued to win the state’s elections. During the November 2, 2004, gubernatorial elections, Manchin won by a large margin and was later reelected by an even large margin in 2008. He won a special election held in 2010 to fill the Senate seat vacated by incumbent Democrat Robert Byrd when he died in office. Manchin won with 54% of the vote. He was later elected to a full-term in 2012 with 61% of the vote. In 2008, he was elected with 50% of the vote.

Manchin later became the state’s senior U.S. Senator when fellow Democrat Jay Rockefeller retired in 2015. Being a member of Congress, he is known for his bipartisanship, voting or working with Republicans on issues such as abortion and gun ownership.

John Manchin owned a carpet furniture store while his father Joseph Manchin owned a grocery store. They both served as Farmington’s mayor. His uncle Antonio James Manchin was a member of the West Virginia House of Delegates a later became the West Virginia Secretary of State and Treasurer.

Manchin announced on October 5, 2018, that he would vote to confirm Kavanaugh.

He was then the only Democrat to vote to confirm Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court in a 50-48 count on October 6, 2018.
