After several other unsuccessful business ventures (including an attempt to purchase the American Football League’s San Diego Chargers in 1967. He went on to begin an oil and gas exploration business in Arkansas, Jones Oil, and Land Lease which became successful. Next, he formed a partnership with Yankee Global Enterprises in 2008, to create Legends Hospitality, a food, beverage, merchandise, retail, and stadium operations company serving entertainment venues.

A Career with Dallas Cowboys

He purchased the Cowboys from H.R. “Bum” Bright” on February 25, 1989, for $140 million. Soon after the purchase, he fired longtime coach Tom Landry and went on to hire his old teammate at Arkansas, Jimmy Johnson.
