Who is James Maddison?

James Daniel Maddison is a popular English professional footballer who plays as an attacking midfielder for the Premier League club Leicester City and the England national team.

He started his career with Coventry City prior to joining Norwich City in 2016. Maddison spent the 2016-17 season on loan at Scottish Premiership club Aberdeen. In his first season back at Norwich, he was named in the Championship PFA Team of the Year and EFL Team of the Season. Maddison then joined Premier League club Leicester City in 2018. He was later capped by England at the under-21 level from 2017 to 2019 and made his debut for the senior team in 2019. Maddison was part of the 2022 FIFA World Cup squad.

Coventry City

James joined Coventry City’s youth team and was included in the first-team team in the 2013-14 season, though did not make an appearance. Maddison then made his debut in August 2014, coming on as a sub in a 2-1 League Cup loss to Cardiff City. He made his league debut, again as a sub, in a 3-1 home loss over Bristol City and his first league start in the next game over Oldham Athletic. Maddison scored his first league goal in the game, with a free kick in the first half, as the Sky Blues lost the game 4-1.

He then signed his first professional deal, lasting 3-and-a-half years in November 2014. However, he missed much of the rest of the 2014-15 season following being sent off during a Boxing Day loss to Doncaster Rovers and then picking up a back injury.

Norwich City

He then signed for Premier League club Norwich City on a three-and-a-half-year deal for an undisclosed fee on February 1, 2016. However, he was immediately loaned back to Coventry City for the rest of the 2015-16 season. He made his first team debut for Norwich in an EFL Cup tie over his former club Coventry on August 23, 2016. On August 31, 2016, he was loaned to Scottish Premiership club Aberdeen for the first part of the 2016-17 season. Maddison then made his debut as a sub over Inverness Caledonian Thistle, then began and scored in the following game in a 3-1 win over Dundee. He later followed this with a last-minute win over the Rangers on September 25.

Following returning from his loan spell at Aberdeen, he made his long-awaited league debut for Norwich on April 17, 2017. He came on as a sub in the second half and scored in a 3-1 win over Preston North End at Deepdale. Maddison then signed a new four-year deal in June. With the arrival of new coach Daniel Farke, he was given regular starts in the team during the 2017-18 season. He was also named Norwich City’s Player of the Season at the conclusion of the campaign and also earned a nomination for the EFL Championship Young Player of the Season award.

James was included in an England under-21 team in March 2016 but was not able to play because of an injury. Maddison earned his first call-up to the senior team in October 2018 for the UEFA Nations League games against Croatia and Spain. He was then included in England’s 23-man team for the 2019 UEFA European Under-21 Championship on May 27, 2019. Maddison scored his first goal for his country during a 3-3 draw with Croatia at the San Marino Stadium on June 24.

He then withdrew from the senior team in October 2019 because of an illness. Maddison was later seen visiting a casino, although his conduct was defended by club manager Brendan Rodgers. He then made his debut for England on November 14, when he came on for Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain in the 56th minute of a 7-0 win against Montenegro in UEFA Euro 2020 qualifying. Following a 3-year absence, Maddison was revealed as part of the 26-man England team for the 2022 FIFA World Cup. However, Maddison did not make an appearance in the tournament. He later made his first start for England in a UEFA Euro 2024 qualifier over Ukraine on March 26, 2023.
