Who is James Corden?

James Corden( James  Kimberly Corden OBE) is an English actor, singer, writer, comedian, producer and a journalist, and television host. Since 2015 he has hosted The Late Show with James Corden, a late-night television talk show on CBS in the United States. 

James Corden Career

James started his career while he was 18 years when he appeared for the first time on stage with a one-line part in the 1996 musical Martin Guerre. Corden’s first TV reporter was on the BBC’s Good Morning with Anne and Nick, while they were interviewing Meat Loaf. His work on television included Gareth Jones in the 1999 series Boyz Unlimited. In 1998 he started in Tango advertisement and he also had a role as a bookish student in Teachers and 2000 a small part in an episode of Hollyoaks. He made guest appearances on several shows including Little Britain and Dalziel and Pascoe in 2004.

From 2000 to 2005, Corden starred in British TV series known as Fat Friends as Jamie Rymer. After that, he got nominated for the 2000 Royal television Society Award Network Newcomer on the Screen for his work. In 2006, he appeared in the film Starter for 10. From 2007 to early 2010, he starred his own series, the BBC Three sitcom Gavin & Stacey. James co-wrote the series with his Fat Friends co-star Ruth Jones.

Corden won the Best Male Comedy  Performer while Gavin and Stacey won the Best New British Television Comedy at the 2007 British Comedy Awards. At the 2008 BAFTAS, he won the Best Male Comedy Performer while Gavin and Stacey won the BAFTA’s Audience Award for Programme of the Year. After that in December 2008, the show won the Best TV Comedy in 2008 British Comedy Award. Stacey and Gavin also won the Most Popular Comedy Programme at the National Television Award in 2010.

Gavin and Stacey returned for a special Christmas in 2019, with the episodes achieving the highest Christmas Day viewership in the UK for more than a decade.

After the two years run of Gavin and Stacey, his professional try outside the successful series proved somewhat chequered. In 2007 he hosted Big Brother’s Big Mouth, alongside Mathew Horne. After that in 2008, he also appeared in the film of Toby Young’s 2001 autobiography Hoe to Lose Friends & Alienate People.

In 2009, Corden and Horne formed a show that was called Horne & Corden. The show was described by the BBC as a ”  traditional comedy entertainment show in the style of Morecambe and wise”. Horne & Corden show only run for one series since it was poorly received by critics. Still, in 2009, Corden starred as the Lead character in the film Lesbian Vampire Killer which was also not a success. In February 2009, he co-presented the Brit Award alongside Mathew Horne and Kylie Minogue. Corden also appeared in a sketch for the UK charity telethon Comic Relief. The Comic gave the England football team a motivational talk and after that, they presented a section with Horne showing their best fit of comedy.

In March 2010, he started hosting the Sky comedy/sports panel show called A League of Their  Own. Corden hosted the show alongside team captain Andrew Flint off and Jamie Red Knapp. He also presented the Sport Relief 2010 alongside Davina McCall and others. Corden contributed a “sequel” to the 2009 England football team sketch and this time giving a motivational talk to various sports stars including David Beckham and motor racing driver Jenson Button.

James also took part in Channel 4’s Comedy Gala. The show was a benefit show that was held in aid of Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital. The show was filmed at the O2 Arena in London in March 2010. Corden performed his England World Cup single with Dizzee Rascal on the finale of Britain’s Got Talent on 5th, June 2010. The proceeds from the single went ahead to London’s Great Ormond Street Hospital.

In February 2011, James presented the 2011 Brit Award for the second time. In March 2011 James repeated his Gavin and Stacey role as Smithy in a Red Nose Day sketch. The sketch included appearances by then UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown, Paul McCartney, JLS, and Justin Bieber. He then appeared in The Three Musketeers in 2011.

From June 2011, he played the lead role in the hit comedy play One Man, Two Guvnors. The play was also cine cast worldwide as part of the National Theatre Live and transferred from the National Theatre to the West End after touring. Corden won the Tony Award for Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Play for his performance in June 2012.

He hosted the Brit Award for the third time in February 2012. James starred as the Baker in the Disney film adaptation of the musical Into the  Woods in 2014. Corden narrated Roald Dahl’s Esio Trot, a BBC television film adaptation of Roald Dahl’s classic novel in 2015. After that James appeared in the animated comedy film Trolls as Biggie, a chubby friendly tall.

In 2020, his leading role in the musical comedy film The Prom received negative reviews, and was named ” one of the worst performances of the 21st century “. Because of his portrayal of a gay man while he was straight it was branded as offensive and some said it perpetuated and capitalized on stereotypes of gay white men. James got a huge amount of backlash when this performance earned him a Golden Globe Award nomination for Best Actor Musical or Comedy Film.
