Who is J. K. Dobbins?
J’Kaylin ”J.K.” Dobbins is a well-known American professional football running back for the Baltimore Ravens of the National Football League (NFL). Dobbins played college football at Ohio State and was drafted in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft by the Ravens.
J. K. Dobbins Career
In 2017, his first game at Ohio State, he rushed for 181 yards on 29 carries over Indiana. He had received the start over the returning 2016 Big Ten Freshman of the Year Mike Weber, who was recovering from an injury. In Dobbins’s first season, he recorded 100 rushing yards in 6 games and became only the 4th freshman in Ohio State history to eclipse the 1,000-yard rushing mark in a season. During the 2017 Big Ten Football Championship Game, he overtook Maurice Clarett for the most rushing yards by a Freshman with his 174-yard, MVP performance. In a 24-7 Cotton Bowl Classic victory over USC, he set the Freshman rushing record at 1,403 yards.
Despite a record-setting 2017 season, he would once again split time with Weber in his Sophomore year. The time split paired with Dwayne Haskins’ award-winning performance at quarterback lead to a decrease in productivity for Dobbins. He then concluded the season with 1,053 yards rushing but stayed the team’s leading rusher. Notably, Dobbins had his first 200+ yard rushing game against Maryland. He would later join his junior season with high expectations in 2019. He met his expectations when he gained 100+ yards in 10 games during the season. This consisted of a 4-touchdown performance over Michigan that stemmed from 211 yards rushing. Dobbins completed his season as the only Buckeye in history to rush for more than 2,000 yards in a season, passing Eddie George.
He was also a Doak Walker Award finalist and completed 6th for the Heisman Trophy. Dobbins was named First-team All-Big Ten and First-Team All-American as an All-Purpose player by the Football Writers Association of America. He then revealed his intention to forgo his senior season and join the 2020 NFL Draft on December 30, 2019. Dobbins left Ohio State with a sum of 4,459 yards rushing, which makes him second all-time. He also won 4 Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week Awards, 3 Big Ten titles, and 2 bowl games.
He was picked in the 2nd round of the 2020 NFL Draft by the Baltimore Ravens with the 55th overall selection. The Ravens previously exchanged tight end Hayden Hurst with the Atlanta Falcons to gain the pick used on him.
On September 13, 2020, on his NFL debut over the Cleveland Browns, he had 7 carries for 22 yards and scored his first 2 career rushing touchdowns in a 38-6 win in Week 1. He then had his first 100-yard rushing game with 15 carries for 113 rushing yards in the 24-28 defeat by the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 8. Dobbins was placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list by the team on November 23, 2020, and then activated on December 4. His first start in his career came in a Week 16 27-13 victory against the New York Giants. Dobbins completed the game with 11 carries for 77 yards and a touchdown. He then rushed for 160 yards and 2 touchdowns during the 38-3 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 17.
He suffered a torn ACL in the final preseason game over the Washington Football Team on August 28, 2021. Dobbins was then placed on the injured reserve after a few days. He did not play the whole of the 2021 season and was put into rehab during his time off.
He was cleared for full-time starter duty following missing the first 2 weeks of the season. However, Dobbins suffered another knee injury in Week 6 and was placed on injured reserve on October 22, 2022. On December 10, 2022, he was activated from the injured reserve.
