A College Career
He played his first two collegiate seasons at Oregon State and finished his career at the University of Minnesota. As a senior, he averaged 10.9 points and 6.1 rebounds for the Golden Gophers.
A Coaching Career
From 2004 to 2007, he spent three seasons with the Charlotte Bobcats as an assistant coach before spending four (2007 to 2011) seasons as an assistant coach for the Minnesota Timberwolves. On July 15, 2011, he was hired as an assistant coach by the Rockets. On November 18, 2015, he was made interim coach of the Rockets after Kevin McHale was fired. That same day, he made his coaching debut against the Portland Trail Blazers with a 108-103 overtime victory. After the season, he informed the Rockets that he had withdrawn his name for the head coaching search, effectively ending his tenure with the Houston Rockets.
Next, he was hired by the Memphis Grizzlies on June 8, 2016, to be an associate head coach. On November 27, 2017, he was promoted as the Grizzlies’ interim head coach after the firing of David Fizdale. He was announced on May 1, 2018, as the new permanent head coach of the Grizzlies. The Grizzlies then fired Bickerstaff on April 11, 2019, after the team failed to reach the playoffs. On May 19, 2019, the Cleveland Cavaliers named him an assistant and associate head coach. The following year on February 19, head coach John Beilein resigned as head coach of the Cavaliers, and Bickerstaff was announced as the new head coach.
