Who is Howard Stern?

Howard Stern is an American radio and television personality, author and comedian. He is well known due to his radio show, The Howard Stern Show which was nationally syndicated on terrestrial radio from 1986 to 2005. He has often described himself as the King of All Media since 1992 following his success outside his radio career.

Stern started his radio career while he was still at Boston University where he landed his first jobs. He established his on-air personality from 1976 to 1982 through morning posts at WCCC in Hartford, Connecticut, WRNW in Briarcliff Manor, New York and WWDC in Washington D.C.

Howard Stern’s Career

Stern’s father introduced him to radio, a sound engineer. Despite being an awkward and shy child, Stern found an outlet in the medium and began producing his own show on a tape recorder. While still a student at Boston University, he worked at the school’s radio station. He later graduated in 1976 with a degree in communications. Stern completed a series of unmemorable on-the-air jobs in Hartford, Connecticut, and Detroit, Michigan before he moved to Washington, D.C. This is where he teamed with Robin Quivers, who became his right-hand man and developed a profile that turned out to be very popular.

Eventually, the radio program became number one in D.C. area due to its mix of Stern’s self-deprecating jokes; provocative interviews with lesbians; commentary on sex, celebrities, and bodily functions; and in-studio visits by naked women. However, they were both fired in 1982 after a dispute with station management, and they subsequently signed on with WNBC-AM in New York City. In spite of Stern producing another top-rated show, continuous arguments concerning the program’s content led to his dismissal.

The Howard Stern Show

The Howard Stern Show began airing in 1985 on New York City’s WXRK-FM after which it was syndicated nationally the following year. Stern’s wild humour, often criticized as misogynist and racist increasingly attracted the attention of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), which by the late 1990s had levied over $2 million in fines against the program due to its often obscene content. Additionally, a number of groups demanded a boycott of the show. Stern, a vocal supporter of the First Amendment, rejected to change his highly provocative act.

However, the constant scrutiny of his material caused Stern to sign a five-year, $500 million deal in 2004 with Sirius Satellite Radio (later Sirius XM Radio), which was not subject to FCC regulations regarding language and content. Stern’s 1st show which was on satellite radio aired on January 9, 2006, and the relationship proved beneficial enough for both parties that Stern re-signed with Sirius on several occasions. The 2019 Howard Stern Comes Again is a collection of his more notable interviews.
