Heather Bresch (Born: Heather Manchin) is an American executive who has served as the CEO of Mylan since 2012. Bresch is the first woman to run a Fortune 500 pharmaceutical company.
She is also the daughter of former West Virginia Governor and current U.S. Senator Joe Manchin. Bresch was listed as #22 in Fortune magazine’s “Most Powerful Women” list in 2015.
She has been subject to two controversies. In 2007, she faced accusations of inflating her resume with an unearned MBA degree. As the CEO of Mylan, she was accused of overpricing the company’s EpiPen products.

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported in 2007 that Bresch had claimed to have an MBA degree from West Virginia University but then the university disputed that. Finally, the university awarded her an EMBA despite her having completed only 26 of the required 48 credits. During that time, her father was governor of West Virginia.
As a result of the controversy, West Virginia University announced in April 2008 that it would rescind Bresch’s degree.

She started working as a clerk in a factory owned by Mylan, a generic drug company and rose through the company to become the chief executive officer in 2012. She has served in several executive roles at Mylan.
Heather has served as senior vice president of corporate strategic development, Head of North American Operations, chief operating officer, and chief integration officer. She also led the integration of Matrix Laboratories Limited and Merck KGaA’s generics and specialty pharmaceutical businesses with Mylan’s operations. Bresch served as chair of the Generic Pharmaceutical Association (GPhA) for two terms. In 2009, she was appointed president and in March 2011 joined Mylan’s board of directors.
Her appointment as chief executive officer (CEO) was announced in 2011. She officially took office in January 2012. She became the first female CEO of a large pharmaceutical business. During that time, she was one of 18 female CEOs of a Fortune 500 company.
