An Amateur Career
He played for the Jonstorps U20 team in 2009-10, scoring three points (one goal and two assists) n three games. The following year, he played 39 games and provided four assists for Rogle BK.
A Professional Career
He began his professional career in 2011-12 with Rogle. As he played 20 games and scored four points, and also was named the U20 Super Elit League’s Best Defenceman. He was a top prospect who was ranked fourth among European skaters by the NHL Central Scouting Bureau and he was selected by the Anaheim Ducks in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft. He was considered by some to be a sleeper pick for the draft, with Rob Brodie comparing him to Erik Karlsson and Mika Zibanejad, two other Swedish prospects who rose sharply in the Draft.
A Career with the Anaheim Ducks
In 2012-13, he made his North American debut with the Norfolk Admirals, the Duck’s former American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate. That same year, he played 44 games, getting 11 points (one goal and ten assists). On November 6, 2013, he scored his first NHL goal against Mike Smith of the Phoenix Coyotes. After proving himself as one of Anaheim’s top defensemen, on October 27, 2016, he signed a six-year $31.5M contract.
A Career with the Boston Ruins
In the final year of his contract and set to become an unrestricted free agent, and trade rumors about him were increasing. He thus was traded to the Boston Ruins on March 19, 2022, for a 2022 first-round pick, a 2023 second-round pick, and a 2024 second-round pick, Urho Vaakanainen, and John Moore. After just being acquired by Boston, on March 20, 2022, he was signed to an eight-year $52M contract extension.
An International Career
He has played hockey internationally and thus has represented Sweden at the 2012 U18 World Junior Championship, winning the silver medal. He was voted one of the Swedish team’s three most valuable players of the tournament in the 2012 J18 World Championships.
