 Who is Gavin Escobar?

Gavin Louis Escobar was a famous American professional football player who was a tight end for six seasons in the National Football League (NFL). He played college football for the San Diego State Aztecs, and then for the Dallas Cowboys and Baltimore Ravens from 2013 to 2017.

Gavin Escobar Career

College career

Gavin received a football scholarship from San Diego State University and accepted it. He then played for the Aztecs from 2009 to 2012. Following his diagnosis with testicular cancer, Escobar was redshirted as a true freshman and was in remission following the tumor being removed. He then started 12 games, recording 29 receptions for 323 yards and 4 touchdowns. Although his role decreased the next year (6 starts in 13 games), his production improved and he completed 5th in the Mountain West Conference (MWC) in receptions (51), receiving yards (780), receiving touchdowns (7), and 6th in receiving yards per reception (15.3).

Within Escobar’s junior year, he recorded 42 receptions for 543 yards and had the 4th-most touchdowns in the conference (6). During the 2011 and 2012 seasons, he was a first-team All-MWC selection. For his college career, he recorded 122 receptions for 1,646 yards, and 17 touchdowns, and did not miss a game. Escobar was then drafted in the second round (47th overall) of the 2013 NFL Draft by the Dallas Cowboys. This was a surprise choice for the franchise following having mixed results from using previous second-round draft choices in tight ends Martellus Bennett and Anthony Fasano.

Professional career

Dallas Cowboys

2013

Gavin made his NFL breakout with the Cowboys at the age of 22, in a 36-31 victory over the New York Giants on September 8, 2013. He was expected to be a pass-catching option in the two tight end packages during his rookie season, but he was used sparingly, recording 9 receptions for 134 yards and 2 touchdowns.

2014

He then remained in a backup position in his second season in the league but was passed on the depth chart by James Hanna. Hanna was used to blocking at the point of attack in the running game. Escobar was mostly used on special teams and as a red zone target, completing with 105 receiving yards and 4 touchdowns on 9 receptions.

Gavin Escobar Height

Escobar had a well-built, muscular and athletic body adding up to an impressive height of 6 ft 6 in (1.98 m) and a weight of 115 kg (254 lbs).

2015

Escobar was not able to increase his role in the team’s offense and stayed as the third-string tight end, although wide receiver Dez Bryant missed 7 games. The 12 games that quarterback Tony Romo missed also impacted his production, completing with 8 receptions for 64 yards and 1 touchdown. He then suffered a season-ending injury when he tore his right Achilles tendon in the last drive of the 14th game of the season over the New York Jets. Escobar was placed on the injured reserve list, so as to promote defensive tackle Casey Walker to the 53-man roster on December 25.

2016

He later made a surprisingly quick recovery from his injury, allowing him to have full participation in training camp. However, he was passed on the depth chart by Geoff Swaim, who showed better blocking ability. Following being used primarily as a core special teams player and only taking part in 29 offensive plays, he became the backup tight end following Swaim suffering a season-ending injury in the week 10 victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers. Due to his struggle with his blocking the team was forced to use offensive lineman Joe Looney as the blocking tight end in short-yardage situations. Gavin completed with 4 receptions and 1 touchdown.

Despite having the size and continuing to improve his technique, Escobar could never develop into a dependable in-line blocker. As with other Cowboys tight ends within the Jason Witten era, the team’s coaches could never find a complementary position for him in the passing game. This limited him to never beginning more than 4 games and recording more than 9 receptions in a season. Escobar played in 62 games (7 starts), making 30 receptions for 333 yards and 8 touchdowns.

Kansas City Chiefs

Gavin then signed a one-year deal with the Kansas City Chiefs as a free agent on March 31, 2017, to provide depth in a position that had some uncertainty. Starter Travis Kelce was rehabbing from off-season shoulder surgery at the time and backup Demetrius Harris was arrested earlier the same month for felony possession of marijuana and possession of paraphernalia. Escobar was later released following not being able to pass Ross Travis on the depth chart on September 2.

Baltimore Ravens

Escobar signed with the Baltimore Ravens, on October 23, 2017, who were searching to improve their depth following tight end Maxx Williams re-injuring his ankle. He was then released on November 18, to make room for Danny Woodhead.

Cleveland Browns

On January 15, 2018, Gavin signed a reserve/future deal with the Cleveland Browns. On April 12, 2018, he was released by the Browns.

Miami Dolphins

On April 26, 2018, Gavin then signed with the Miami Dolphins. On September 1, 2018, he was released but was re-signed after five days. Escobar was later released on September 11, 2018.

San Diego Fleet (AAF)

Following getting released by the Dolphins, he joined the San Diego Fleet of the newly-formed Alliance of American Football. On April 1, 2019, he was placed on injured reserve. In April 2019, the league stopped operations. He had caught 14 passes for 142 yards during his tenure in the AAF.
