After she graduated from college, Whitfield was hired by several stations including; WPLG-TV in Miami, News Channel 8 in Washington, D.C., KTVT-TV in Dallas, WTNH in New Haven, Connecticut, and WCIV in Charleston, South Carolina. After that, she was hired as a correspondent for NBC News. Moreover, at NBC News she was working as an Atlanta-based correspondent for NBC Nightly News from 1995 to 2001.
