He stayed in the position for five years prior to being promoted to assistant coach in the 2001-02 season. Vogel then moved to become an assistant for the Philadelphia 76ers after coaching with Boston.

Vogel later left the 76ers to join the Los Angeles Lakers as an advance scout from 2005 to 2006. Then he joined the Washington Wizards from 2006 to 2007. He later became an assistant for the Indiana Pacers under former Celtics colleague Jim O’Brien.

Indiana Pacers (2011-2016)

2011-2013

Following O’Brien’s firing from his head coaching position, Frank was named interim coach on January 30, 2011. He led the team to the playoffs for the first time since 2006 as interim coach. After this, he was officially named as the new head coach on July 6, 2011. Briefly, before the team was to face the Miami Heat in the 2012 Eastern Conference semifinals, he criticized his opponents for alleged flopping: ”They are the biggest flopping team in the NBA. For these and more remarks he made, he was fined $15,000 by the league.

The Pacers won their first Central Division title since the 2003-04 season on April 7, 2013. They completed the 2012-13 season with a 49-32 record, earning the third seed in the Eastern Conference. Following beating both the Atlanta Hawks and the New York Knicks in six games, the team proceeded to face the Miami Heat in the Eastern Conference Finals. The Pacers were beaten by the Heat 103-102 in overtime after LeBron James drove by Paul George for a wide-open layup with 2.2 seconds left on the clock. Frank was criticized for keeping the Pacers’ main defender, Roy Hibbert, on the bench during the final play. He said that he made the decision out of concern for Chris Bosh and knew that he might do it differently next time. In a back-and-forth series where neither team won consecutive games his team lost in seven games.

2014-2016

Vogel was named the Eastern Conference head coach for the 2014 NBA All-Star Game on January 14, 2014. He had led the team to their best beginning in franchise history, en route to a 56-26 record, good for first in the Eastern Conference. However, again for the second year in a row, the Pacers lost to the Heat in the Conference Finals. Frank then signed a two-year deal extension with the Indiana Pacers, to keep him to 2016. With Paul George missing out in all but six games of the season due to injury, the team just missed out on the playoffs due to tiebreakers with the Brooklyn Nets. Frank brought the team back to the playoffs with a retooled and rejuvenated roster the next season but lost to the Toronto Raptors in seven games in the first round.

After the loss to the Raptors, Pacers’ president Larry Bird revealed on May 5, 2016, that Frank’s contract would not be renewed. He stated the need for ”a new voice” to lead the players. Vogel left Indiana as the franchise’s all-time leader in NBA wins (Bobby ”Slick” Leonard has the most total wins as the Pacers’ head coach, with the majority coming in the ABA).
