Mayor Of Dallas

Johnson was elected mayor on June 8th, 2019. He defeated his opponent Scott Griggs, a city councilman. Scott was defeated in a run-off election.

On June 17, 2019, it was announced that he will assume office. With his election, Johnson became the city of Dallas’s second Black American mayor (the first being Ron Kirk) and one of the country’s youngest mayors. On June 17, 2019, he was sworn in as Mayor by U.S. District Court Judge Sam Lindsay.

Johnson accepted a position as a partner at Locke Lord in August. After accepting the position in September 2019. Moreover, Johnson issued an open letter to the Dallas City Council informing them of Interim CEO Sam Coats of Visit Dallas’ plans to remove Board seats given to the City.

Johnson also faced an EF-3 tornado in Dallas early in his presidency and advocated for government aid. In 2019, Johnson managed a budget that was overwhelmingly approved.

However, when the 2020 budget season began at City Hall, Johnson began advocating for an attempt to “defund the bureaucracy,” a play on the Defund the Police tagline. The Dallas City Council rejected his ideas twice.

In September 2020, Johnson, who had promised to make his proposal public, established a statement on NextDoor criticizing police overtime cutbacks. However, his political opponents termed it as improper and sought to characterize it as illegal. In the following meeting, the Dallas City Council rejected the “defund the bureaucracy” bid once more, voting to reduce the projected police overtime budget by 25% above the mayor’s proposal.

The Mayor’s Task Force on Safe Communities was created in response to the murder of Brandoniya Bennett. Bennett was a 9-year-old girl who was killed in her own house by stray gunshots intended for someone else. Furthermore, the task team provided four proposals for combating violent crime without the involvement of law enforcement.
Johnson went on and established Dallas Works, a summer employment program for Dallas kids, in 2020, based after other cities with considerably more comprehensive summer jobs programs.
