Who is Eric Holcomb?
Eric Holcomb (Eric Joseph Holcomb) is an American politician, currently serving as the 51st governor of Indiana since 2017. Eric is a member of the Republican Party. In addition, he served as the 51st lieutenant governor of Indiana from 2016 to 2017 under Governor Mike Pence.
After Lieutenant Governor Sue stepped down from her term on March 2, 2016. Eric was eventually nominated to fill the remaining time. During the 2016, election, Eric won the election for governor of Indiana over Democratic nominee John R. Gregg. In addition, he was again re-elected in 2020 after he beat Democratic nominee Woody Myers as Libertarian nominee Donald Rainwater.
Career
Early Political Career
His career started when he started working for John Hostettler, who was a member of the United States House of Representatives in 1997. In 2000, he ran for the Indiana House of Representatives but lost to John Frenz.
In 2003, Holcomb worked as an advisor to Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels until 2011. Moreover, he was eventually promoted to the position of Deputy Chief of Staff and served as campaign manager for Daniels’ 2008 gubernatorial campaign. In 2011, he was elected Chairman of the Indiana Republican Party.
However, he stepped down in 2013 to become the state chief of staff to U.S. Senator Dan Coats. 2016 election
During the 2016 gubernatorial election, Eric was a running mate of Governor Mike Pence who was seeking re-election. By late June, rumors had it that Mike was going to be the Republican nominee for Vice President under presumptive presidential nominee Donald Trump began to attract traction.
At the beginning of July, Donald Trump officially appointed Mike as his official running mate. Following his appointment, he withdrew from the race of the gubernatorial election. After he withdrew from the race, Eric withdrew from running as a Lieutenant and decided to run for the governor. During the primary, he was elected on the second ballot by the Indiana State Republican Central Committee.
Moreover, after he was elected he chose Indiana State Auditor Suzanne Crouch as his running mate. The duo was going to face John R. Gregg, 2012, Democratic nominee and former Indiana House Speaker. After over 106-days of the campaign, he defeated Gregg with 51.4% to 45.4%.
