Who is Enock Mwepu?

Enock Mwepu is a famous Zambian former professional footballer who played as a midfielder. Having started his career in his native Zambia, he signed for Australian club Red Bull Salzburg in 2017. He then joined Premier League club Brighton & Hove Albion in 2021. Enock represented and captained the Zambia national team. However, he was forced to retire after the discovery of a hereditary heart condition on October 10, 2022.

Club career

His career started with Kafue Celtic in Lusaka prior to being identified with the 2013 Airtel Rising Stars. During the 2015-16 season, he had little game time with the Power Dynamos football club of Copperbelt. That precipitated a move to NAPSA Stars at the conclusion of the 2016 season.

Salzburg and loan to Liefering

Enock joined Red Bull Salzburg in June 2017 and was loaned out to his feeder club Liefering which plays in Australian Football First League. During the 2019-20 season, he established himself amongst Salzburg’s starting eleven. Mwepu then made his debut in the UEFA Champions League during a 4-3 defeat by Liverpool at Anfield. He then extended his deal with Salzburg until summer 2024 on December 18, 2019.

Brighton & Hove Albion

Mwepu joined Premier League side Brighton & Hove Albion on a four-year deal, for an undisclosed fee on July 6, 2021. He then made his competitive Albion debut in the opening game of the 2021-22 season away at Burnley on August 14. Mwepu was replaced by Adam Lallan at halftime of the final 2-1 win at Turf Moor. On August 24, he assisted Jakub Moder’s first Albion goal in the second-round EFL Cup away fixture at Cardiff City where Albion won 2-0.

Mwepu then scored his first goal for the Seagulls putting them back level to 2-2 in an eventual penalty shootout loss on October 27, away at Leicester City in the EFL Cup. His penalty was saved in the shootout. After three days he scored his first league goal for the Sussex side inspiring Brighton’s comeback with a stunning 25-yard in an eventual 2-2 draw over Liverpool.

2022-retire

His 2022 season was slowed down by injuries and illness, thus having limited playing time. After his first start since his return from injury, he scored and made an assist for Trossard’s opener in the 2-1 away victory at Arsenal on April 9. He assisted Brighton to conclude their seven-match run without a win. Mwepu’s debut season with The Seagulls was full of injuries although he had made a positive impact.

At the club’s end-of-season awards, he earned Goal of the Season for his strike at Liverpool in October. He was able to recover in time to appear as a sub in the final game of the season. Brighton won 3-1 at home against West Ham, achieving their highest top-flight finish in 9th place. On October 10, 2022, he retired from professional football at the age of 24 following being diagnosed with a rare hereditary heart condition.

International career

Enock was part of Zambia’s national under-17 team in 2014 that represented the country at the 2015 African U-17 Championship. Zambia played against Niger, Guinea, and Nigeria from group A. He is recognized for his versatility in the field of play as demonstrated at the 2017 Under-20 Africa Cup of Nations in Zambia. There, Mwepu scored a goal and was among the best substitutes of the tournament.

He then scored his first international goal for Zambia in an AFCON Qualifier over Algeria at the National Heroes Stadium in Lusaka, a match which Zambia won 3-1 on September 2, 2017.

Coaching career

Following retiring from professional football because of his heart condition, Brighton announced on December 30, that he had been appointed to work in the role of the under-9s coach in their academy from January 2023.
