A Coaching Career
From 1984 to 1988, he was an assistant coach in the National Hockey League with the Philadelphia Flyers and the Chicago Blackhawks 1988 to 1991. His first head coaching job was with the Marine Mariners of the AHL in 1991-92. The team thus ended out of the playoffs with a 23-47-10 record. After parting ways with the Mariners, he returned to the NHL this time with the Ottawa Senators. After spending three years with Ottawa, he took on his second head coaching position this time in Canadian major juniors with the Ontario Hockey League’s Guelph Storm.
With the help of future NHLers, Dan Cloutier and Herberts Vasiljevs, he led the Storm to the Hamilton Spectator Trophy as the team was with the highest point total in the regular season. The next year, Storm made it through the playoffs but failed in the semifinals of the OHL Playoffs. In 1997, McGuire then moved back into professional hockey where he signed on as the head coach with the AHL’s Hartford Wolf Pack. After making two playoff appearances in two years, he once again stepped back from coaching in order to focus on scouting. His last coaching position was as an assistant in 2001-02 with the Philadelphia Flyers. After that, he began working more with the NHL Central Scouting Services.
