As a longtime professional attorney, he previously worked as the United States Attorney for the District of North Dakota from 2001 to 2009 and again from 2019 to 2021. He was appointed by President George W. Bush and Donald Trump, respectively. From 2010 to 2016, between his terms as a United States attorney, he worked as the 37th lieutenant governor of North Dakota. He was also the deputy chief of staff to then-Governor John Hoeven before serving in elected office. Wrigley has held a variety of positions in U.S. District Attorney’s offices.

Drew Wrigley Career

Following law school, he worked as a judicial law clerk in Delaware, following which he became an assistant district attorney in Philadelphia. He worked in the position for five years prior to returning to North Dakota.

U.S. Attorney

President George W. Bush appointed him to be the United States District Attorney for North Dakota in 2001. In the position, Wrigley was responsible for prosecuting all federal crimes committed in the state. His most notable case was the Dru Sjodin kidnapping and murder. In 1973, capital punishment was abolished in the state of North Dakota, but due to the crime involving crossing the state lines, the trial fell under the jurisdiction of the federal government. This left the decision about whether or not to seek the death penalty to him, and he opted to request the death penalty. Wrigley successfully prosecuted Alfonso Rodriguez, a repeat sex offender from Crookston, Minnesota, for the kidnap, rape, and murder of Sjodin (Rodriguez was sentenced to death on September 22, 2006).

President Donald Trump then revealed his intent to nominate Wrigley to be the U.S. Attorney for the District of North Dakota on August 16, 2018. His nomination was later sent to the United States Senate on August 27, 2018. Wrigley’s nomination was not acted upon during the 115th United States Congress., but he was renominated in February 2019. His nomination was reported out of the committee by voice vote on February 28, 2019. On April 11, 2019, Wrigley’s nomination was confirmed by voice vote by the full Senate. He was then sworn into office as the United States Attorney for the second time on April 17, 2019.

Wrigley was requested to resign to reopen the position for nomination, as is routine during a presidential transition on February 8, 2021. On February 23, 2021, he announced his resignation, effective February 28, 2021. He then announced his candidacy for the office of North Dakota Attorney General in the 2022 election on December 30, 2021.

Lieutenant governor

Then-Lieutenant Governor Jack Dalrymple designated Wrigley as his successor on November 4, 2010, once his transition to the governor’s office was completed. The then-Governor John Hoeven had just been elected to the U.S. Senate. Drew was then sworn into office on December 7, 2010, after the swearing-in of Governor Dalrymple. Dalrymple and Wrigley were later elected to full terms in November 2012. His responsibilities as lieutenant governor consisted of presiding over the state senate, overseeing legislative relations, formulating the state budget, and agri-business development. He considered running in the 2016 North Dakota gubernatorial election but ultimately opted not to run.

Attorney general of North Dakota

Governor Doug Burgum appointed him as attorney general of North Dakota on February 8, 2022, after the death of former Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem. On December 30, 2021, he revealed that he would run for a full term in the 2022 North Dakota attorney general election.
