Don ”Wink” Martindale is a famous American football coach who serves as the defensive coordinator for the New York Giants of the National Football League.
Most recently from 2018 to 2022, he worked as the defensive coordinator for the Baltimore Ravens of the National Football League (NFL). On January 9, 2018, he was promoted to defensive coordinator, after spending the previous six seasons as the team’s linebackers coach.
Martindale was honored with the 2023 Paul “Dr. Z” Zimmerman Award on May 22, 2023 as an acknowledgement of his lifetime achievement as NFL assistant coach.
Don Martindale coaching career
Following, his graduation from college, Don took a job with his family’s trucking company, transporting brake parts every day from Dayton, Ohio, to Detroit. This was a grueling 6-hour drive round-journey and he hated it. After one year, he quit driving to pursue his real passion in coaching. Son began his coaching career as an assistant for the team he previously played for in college, the Defiance College Yellow Jackets in the late 1980s.
Martindale also coached at Western Kentucky University for three seasons on the staff of Jack Harbaugh, the father of Ravens head coach John Harbaugh and Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh. Additionally, he coached at the University of Cincinnati for three years, and in 1994 and 1995 at Notre Dame as a defensive assistant for teams that made it to the Fiesta Bowl and Orange Bowl.
Don was the linebackers coach for the Oakland Raiders from 2004 to 2008. At one instance, he was under consideration for the job of Raiders defensive coordinator.
Martindale was hired as the linebackers coach by the Denver Broncos in 2009. Later in 2010, he was promoted to defensive coordinator.
The Ravens signed Don as linebackers coach on February 2, 2012. He was part of the team’s coaching staff that won Super Bowl XLVII. Later he was promoted to defensive coordinator in 2018. Don was released from the Ravens on January 21, 2022.
