 Who is Dodi Fayed?

Emad El-Din Mohamed Abdel Mena’em Fayed famous as Dodi Fayed was a recognized Egyptian film producer and the son of billionaire Mohamed Al Fayed. Fayed was the romantic partner of Diana, Princess of Wales, when they both died in a car crash in Paris, France on August 31, 1997.

Early Life

Following completing his academics, Fayed worked as an attache at the United Arab Emirates in London. He was the first cousin of the late Washington Post Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi, who was assassinated in the Saudi Arabian consulate in Istanbul, Turkey in 2018. Fayed was the executive producer of the movies Chariots of Fire, Breaking Glass, F/X, F/X2, Hook, and The Scarlet Letter. He worked as the executive creative consultant for F/X: The Series. Fayed also served his father on Harrods’ marketing.

Death

In the early hours of August 31, 1997, he and Diana were killed in a car crash in the Pont de I’Alma underpass, in Paris. Fayed and Diana had stopped in Paris en route to London, following having spent 9 days together on holiday in the French and Italian Rivieras aboard his family’s yacht, the Jonikal. Both of them were not wearing seat belts. The only survivor of the accident was bodyguard Trevor Rees-Jones, who was seriously injured but was conscious following the car accident. Fayed was pronounced dead at the scene on removal from the wreckage.

Investigations by the French and British police confirmed that their chauffeur, Henri Paul, was driving under the influence of alcohol and prescription drugs. Paparazzi chasing the couple also are believed to have contributed to the crash. His father, Mohammed Al-Fayed, has claimed that the couple ”were executed by M16 agents”. His former spokesman, Michael Cole, has claimed that the couple had become engaged prior to their demise. Fayed was initially interred in Brookwood Cemetery near Woking, Surrey, but was disinterred and re-interred on the d=grounds of the Fayed estate in Oxted, Surrey, in October 1997.

Legacy

His father erected 2 memorials for his son and Diana at Harrods. The first one, unveiled on April 12, 1998, comprises photos of the two behind a pyramid-shaped display that holds a wine glass still smudged with lipsticks from Diana’s final dinner, and a ring Fayed bought the day prior to their death. The second one, unveiled in 2005 and titled Innocent Victims, is a 3-meter (10′) high bronze statue of two dancing on a beach, beneath the wings of an albatross. The memorials were designed by 80-year-old Bill Mitchell, a close friend of Fayed’s father and architect for Harrods for over 40 years. It was revealed that the statue would be returned to the Al-Fayed family in January 2018.
