College career

He attended and played college football at Ohio State under head coach Urban Meyer. Ward played in 12 games, recording 7 tackles in 2015 as a true freshman at Ohio State. In 2016, as a sophomore, he played in all 13 games and had 23 tackles. He then became a starter as a junior in 2017. Joining the 2018 NFL Draft, he decided not to play in the 2017 Colton Bowl.

He launched an official statement via his Twitter account on December 29, 2017, revealing his decision to forgo his senior season and join the 2018 NFL Draft. He also opted to skip the Cotton Bowl Classic. Ward then attended the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis and finished the majority of combine drills, but opted to skip the short shuttle and three-cone drill. He then attended pre-draft visits with many teams, such as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Chicago Bears, Miami Dolphins, Buffalo Bills, San Francisco 49ers, and Cleveland Browns. At the end of the pre-draft process, he was projected to be a top-ten pick by NFL draft experts and scouts. Ward was rated as the top cornerback prospect in the draft by Sports Illustrated and NFL analyst Mike Mayock. He was also ranked as the second-best cornerback by DraftScout.com.

The Cleveland Browns picked him in the first round (4th overall) of the 2018 NFL Draft. He was the first defensive back drafted in 2018. Ward became the highest-picked cornerback from Ohio State since Shawn Springs, who was selected 3rd overall in the 1997 NFL Draft.
