A High School Career
He attended Prior Lake High School where he was coached by Jon Miller. As a freshman, he averaged 8.8 points per game followed by 21.4 points per game as a sophomore. As a junior, he missed 12 games. Also as a junior, he averaged 27.5 points and 11.0 rebounds per game. As he helped the team to a school-record 25-4 season and the Minnesota Class 4A, Section 2 championship game. He was named a McDonald’s All-American. And was also one of the five finalists for the Minnesota Mr. Basketball award. On February 24, 2020, he surpassed the 2,000-point milestone, finishing with 35 points in a 90-76 victory against Eagan High School.
Recruiting
He was considered the No. 32 prospect and No. 2 in Minnesota in the class of 2020 by 247Sports. He then committed to playing college basketball for Marquette on November 22, 2019, over offers from Minnesota, Indiana, Memphis, Kansas, and North Carolina. Dawson chose the Golden Eagles because of his strong relationship with coach Steve Wojciechowski and his staff. In June 2018, Wojciechowski began recruiting Dawson and took him on an official visit in February 2019.
A College Career
On November 26, 2020, in his college debut, he scored 19 points in a 99-57 win against Arkansas-Pine Bluff. He then scored a season-high 28 points against Villanova on February 10, 2021. He averaged 13 points and a team-high 6.6 rebounds per game. After the season, he declared for the 2021 NBA draft while maintaining his college eligibility. Concurrently, he entered his name into the NCAA’s Transfer Portal. On July 8, 2021, he committed to North Carolina.
And joined fellow transfers Brady Manek and Justin McKoy as members of head coach Hubert Davis’ first Tar Heels team. On January 27, 2022, he took a leave of absence from the team in order to deal with some family health issues. It was announced on February 10, 2022, that Dawason would miss the rest of the season to be with his family. In 16 games, he averaged nine points and 5.5 rebounds per game. Following the season, he entered the transfer portal, citing the family issues of the past year and his desire to be closer to family. He then announced on April 18, 2022, his transfer to Minnesota.
A National Team Career
In addition to playing basketball in college and high school, he has also played basketball nationally. Thus he helped the United States win its first gold medal at the FIBA 3×3 Under-18 World Cup in 2019 in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. In the tournament, he accumulated 52 points, tying for the most points. He was also named MVP of the event as well as the 2019 Basketball Men’s 3×3 U18 National Championship.
