Who is David Perdue?

David Perdue is an American business executive and politician who served as Georgia’s United States Senator from 2015 to 2021 as well as a member of the Republican Party. With 12 years working as a management consultant, he became the senior vice president of  Reebok and eventually became the chief executive officer (CEO).

Perdue later joined Pillow Tex, a North Carolina textile manufacturing company where he worked his way up and eventually became CEO. He then ran for U.S Senate in 2014  winning against Democratic Party nominee, Michelle Nunn. In 2020, he ran for reelection but however lost to Democratic Party candidate Jon Ossoff. In the November 3 elections, neither candidate received over 50% of the votes leading the two candidates to a runoff on 5th January 2021. Ossoff won the elections with Perdue conceding defeat on January 8.

After the elections in November, Perdue called for Georgia’s top election’s official’s resignation claiming without evidence that there were election failures. These allegations were however unspecified. In addition, he supported a lawsuit by Trump’s allies who sought to overturn the results of the election. On allegations of STOCK Act violations, Perdue was connected to the 2020 congressional insider trading scandal. This was on the basis of stocks Perdue sold before the stock market crash of 2020 allegedly using knowledge from a closed senate meeting. However, the inquiries were dropped by the U.S Department of justice without placing any charges on Perdue.

Perdue attended Northside High School in 1968 where he excelled in both academics and athletics. He attended the United States Air Force Academy for his college education starting in June 1968 on appointment by congressman Jack Brinkley of Georgia. He later transferred to Georgia Tech and earned a bachelor’s degree in industrial engineering in 1972as well as a master’s degree in operations research in 1975.

David Perdue Career

Perdue started his career at Kurt Salmons Associates which is an international consulting firm in 1972 where he worked as a management consultant for 12 years. He left the firm in 1984 where he moved to an international clothing company, Gitano Group Inc to work as a managing director from 1991 to 1992. He then became senior vice president of Asia operations for Sara Lee Corporation where he was involved in obtaining suppliers in China and Hongkong. The company closed a number of plants in the U.S including four in Georgia. Perdue later became senior vice president of operations at Hagger clothing after two years. He was responsible for increasing the company’s international production in lower-cost countries by 75%.

He then joined Reebok in 1998 as a senior vice president where he eventually rose to CEO. Perdue was responsible for the revival of Reebok’s sneaker line. In addition, he negotiated a contract with the National Football League which was described as revolutionary by a former Reebok which repositioned the company’s shoe brand. Perdue later left Reebok to become the CEO of pillow Tex in June 2002. Pillow Tex had recently emerged from a state of bankruptcy facing a big debt and an underfunded pension liability. Perdue left the company in 2003 after he was unable to get additional funding from the company’s investors as well as lacked a buyer for the company.

He received a total of $1.7 million as compensation after working for only 9 months. Pillowtex announced that it would be going out of business in July 2003 with almost 2500 employment cases filed in federal court against the company. Perdue is given credit for organizing the sale of Dollar General to KKR which is a private equity investor in 2007. Dollar General gave him $42 million in compensation in 2007 and 2008. With the sale of KKR, Dollar General faced lawsuits from shareholders claiming that Perdue and other executives undersold them. It paid $40 million to settle the lawsuits.

Establishment

Later, he worked as a senior consultant for Gujarat Heavy Chemicals Ltd which is an Indian chemical and textile conglomerate from 2007 to 2009. In 2010, Sonny Perdue, who was his cousin as well as the governor at that time appointed him as a director of the Georgia Ports Authority. In April 2011, he established Perdue Partners which is a global trading firm in Atlanta. Perdue partners then acquired Benton Express in December 2012, a logistic company based in Atlanta.

He later renamed it Benton Global. In February 2013, Beton Global started hauling cargo from the port directly instead of contracting trucking services. He left the port’s board in mid-2013. In 2015, Benton Global closed suddenly. Perdue was later a member of the board of directors of the data marketing firm Cardlytics from 2010 to 2014. In compensation for his board service, he received 75,000 shares. Perdue made a total of $6 million from shares.
