From 1993 to 2012 he served as a weatherman for Oklahoma city for channel 4. He also forecasted the station’s weekday morning forecasts. Payne also did the noontime on Monday and Tuesday newscasts for the station.

He started his television professional as a weatherman at KTUL -TV in Tulsa where he became the fourth generation in Oklahoma.
As a result of being a morning meteorologist at KFOR-TV, he left KTUL in 1993. During the newscast, he had been not known for his funny side. Being a chief meteorologist at KWTV he entertained and aimed to become a newsreader at Kent Ogle. During his professional, he declared to keep an eye on several hundred superstorms. The superstorm was procreated by a massive supercell that penetrated a path from Southwestern to Central Oklahoma during a devastating superstorm outbreak.On May 3, 1999, 66 superstorms were produced and 44 people were killed across Oklahoma and Kansas.
