During his tenure with Washington, as the team’s defensive ”anchor”, Butz assisted the Redskins in reaching the Super Bowl thrice, winning twice. Butz was named among the 70 Greatest Redskins in franchise history and a member of the NFL 1980s All-Decade Team. Prior to turning professional, he played college football for the Purdue Boilermakers. Butz was later inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2014.

Dave Butz Career

College career

Dave played college football at Purdue University, where he was a 1972 finalist for the Lombardi Award. He was also a first-team All-Big Ten member and played in both the Senior Bowl and the East-West Shrine Game, and was named the Defensive MVP. In 2004, he was named to the Purdue Boilermakers’ Intercollegiate Athletics Hall of Fame. Butz was then named to Purdue’s All-Time Football team and was also inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2014.

Professional career

Dave was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 1st round (5th overall) of the 1973 NFL Draft, where he played for two seasons. He was then granted free agency in 1975, because of a mistake in the deal that he had signed as a rookie in 1973. Redskins coach George Allen quickly signed Butz, but the NFL ruled that the Redskins had to compensate the Cardinals with two first-round draft selections (1977 & 1978) and a second-round pick (1978).

Dave played for the Washington Redskins for 14 years, having 3 Super Bowl appearances. He defeated the Miami Dolphins in Super Bowl XVII, lost to the Angeles Raiders in Super Bowl XVIII, and won Super Bowl XXII against the Denver Broncos. At the victory parade following Super Bowl XXII, Butz famously shouted to the crowd, ”We Came, we saw, we kicked their butts.”

1983-1987

He ranks 5th in franchise history in sacks as of 2022 (59.0, was 3rd in 2008). In 1983, Butz was a one-time Pro Bowler in a season in which he posted 11 sacks, a career-best. Butz was then named to the NFL All-Pro team in 1983 and 1984. He just missed 4 games in his whole 16-year career.

He was one of the largest players in the NFL, when he played standing 6’8” and roughly weighing around 300 pounds. Butz famously checked himself out of the hospital to play in the team’s game over the New York Jets in October 1987. Although he had dropped from 313 to 287 pounds because of the illness and feeling dizzy in the second half, he made a game-saving sack of Ken O’Brien to stop a Jets’ drive late in the game and received the game ball. Following the game, Butz checked himself back into the hospital where he stayed until the next Wednesday.

1988-retirement

Dave played in his 197th game for the Redskins’ franchise, passing Len Hauss to set a franchise record for games played in 1988. He would then retire at 203 games played for Washington. On May 18, 1989, he announced his retirement as an active player at the age of 38. From 1973 to 1988, Butz appeared in 216 NFL games, 191 as a starter. Dave tallied 64 sacks in his career and was the oldest starting player in the NFL when he retired. He was picked to the NFL 1980s All-Decade Team and was also named among the 70 Greatest Redskins at the team’s 70th anniversary in 2002. Butz’s name is featured together with that of other notable players in team history on the ”Ring of Fame” at FedExField.

Post-football life

He moved to Belleville, Illinois, early in his NFL career and went on to reside in the area for the rest of his life. In the early 2000s, he worked as a board member of the National Rifle Association.
