After playing in the Basketball Bundesliga for seven seasons, he was a four-time All-Star and three-time champion. Therefore, he signed with the Boston Celtics of the NBA where he played for four seasons before a trade brought him to the Chicago Bulls in March 2021. A Career with the Phantoms Braunschweig (2010-2012)
He made his professional debut during the 2010-11 season in the German top-tier level league the Basketball Bundesliga. Primarily he gained playing time with Braunschweig’s development squad where he played alongside his elder brother Frank from 2010 to 2012. In 2011, he earned the Eurobasket.com website’s All-2.Pro B Most Improved Player of the Year. Moreover, while also in Braunschweig, he was a teammate to fellow future NBA player Dennis Schroder.

He suffered a torn meniscus in his left knee on March 12, 2018, thereby missing the remainder of the 2017-18 season after he repaired his left knee lateral meniscus in surgery. Again he was found to have a slight tear of the plantar fascia in his right foot on October 29, 2018, and was scheduled to be out indefinitely. But he returned shortly later after the injury in a game against the Portland Trail Blazers on November 11.
The Boston Celtics announced on July 17, 2019, that they had re-signed Daniel along with former Brose Bamberg teammate Brad Wanamaker. Thus the contract was reported to be worth $10 million in total for the 2019-20 and 2020-21 seasons. Two-thirds through the season, he had a career-high 25 points and 16 rebounds on February 21, 2020, in a win against the Minnesota Timberwolves.
