Who is Craig T Nelson?

Craig T Nelson (Craig Theodore Nelson) is an American actor best known for his role as Hayden Fox in the television series Coach (for which he won an Emmy). He is also known for playing Deputy Ward Wilson in the 1980 film Stir Crazy, Steven Freeling in the 1982 film Poltergeist, the Warden in My Name is Earl, and also Mr. Incredible in the 2004 film The Incredibles and its 2018 sequel. Craig also starred as Zeek Braverman in the television series Parenthood.

He dropped out of school in 1969 and moved to Hollywood to pursue an acting career, changing his middle name to “Theodore” because there was already a Craig Richard Nelson in the Screen Actors Guild. When Nelson first moved to California, he then took up a job as a security guard at a soap factory until finding work as a comedy writer.

He was also an early member of The Groundlings comedy troupe. Nelson, Barry Levinson, and Rudy De Luca formed their own comedy team and were then regular performers at The Comedy Store. He left the comedy world in 1973, explaining “the standup comedy life was pretty unfulfilling for me” and he then settled in Montgomery Creek, CA where there was no electricity and also no running water; “it was contentment, The Waltons, he said. Craig had different jobs during that time including janitor, plumber, carpenter, surveyor, and high school teacher. He then returned to acting five years later.

Nelson was featured as a prosecuting attorney who opposes Al Pacino in the 1979 film …And Justice for All, which was co-written by Levinson. In 1983, He appeared in Silkwood 1983, directed by Mike Nichols and also starring Meryl Streep, as the high school football coach of Tom Cruise in the drama All the Right Moves and also as one of the stars of director Sam Peckinpah’s final film, The Osterman Weekend.
