Atwood began her profession as a fashion advisor in Washington in the early 1970s. In 1980 she moved to New York and studied art at New York University. Her film profession began after an opportunity encounter with someone whose mother was designing the sets for the movie Ragtime. She got the job of a production assistant (PA) in the movie. Atwood served as an assistant to a costume designer and finally earned her initial movie credit for A Little Sex, directed by Bruce Paltrow.
Finally, Colleen entered the world of costume design for theater and movies. She initially came to popularity through her work on Sting’s Bring on the Night World Tour, which was also made into a documentary by the same title. An essential turning point in her profession came when she met director Tim Burton through production designer Bo Welch, whom she had worked with in Joe Versus the Volcano. Atwood and Burton worked together on more than seven movies in the following two decades. They began with Edward Scissorhands and comprised Sleepy Hollow, Ed Wood, Planet of the Apes, Big Fish, and Sweeney Todd.
Later in 1990, she moved to Los Angeles. Atwood has been partially involved in creating or has been the lead designer for producing costumes for more than 50 movies to date.
