Clark ”Jethro” Gillies was a famous Canadian professional ice hockey player. Between 1974 and 1988, Gillies played for the New York Islanders and Buffalo Sabres of the National Hockey League. From 1977 to 1979, he served as captain of the Islanders and won the Stanley Cup four years consecutively with the team from 1980 to 1983. Early career
Clark’s initial professional sports experience was in baseball. At the age of 16, he signed with the Houston Astros in 1970 and played three years of minor league baseball in Covington, Virginia. In 86 games, he hit .241 as a catcher/first baseman. In 1972, he platooned at the first base alongside future Islanders teammate Bob Bourne. After suffering from homesickness, he continued to play hockey during the off-season.
Finally, he proceeded to play in the Western Canada Hockey League with the Regina Pats. Although the Pats were scouting another player at the time, they were impressed by Gillies, who was a bigger player for the era. The Islanders made him their first-round choice in the 1974 NHL draft, taking him 4th overall later in 1974. Gillies established himself as one of the toughest players in the National Hockey League (NHL), pummeling Philadelphia Flyers enforcer Dave Schultz, in his rookie season of 1974-75.
1976 to 1983
Clark was named team captain, in the latter half of the 1976-77 season. Despite his articulate speaking manner and amiable nature, he never felt fully comfortable as captain. He captained the team through two disappointing seasons, in part due to the Islanders appearing to lack team toughness. Gillies allowed Denis Potvin to take over as captain during the pre-season of 1979-80. He was able to get the best of Terry O’Reilly, one of the Boston Bruins’ toughest players, several times during the 1980 playoffs. This assisted to fuel the Islanders’ drive to the Stanley Cup.

Additionally, in 1980-81 and 1981-82. Gillies completed tenth in the voting for the Hart Trophy for the most valuable player in the NHL in 1977.
