Christof Putzel Biography

Christof Putzel is an American journalist and correspondent born in 1979 at Washington, D.C. The DuPont Award-winning journalist is a former correspondent for Al Jazeera America’s news magazine America Tonight.

Putzel attended Connecticut College where he made his first documentary, Left Behind which is about AIDS orphans in Kenya. He is a third generation journalist who developed an early fascination with the news from his grandfather.

Putzel has spend over a decade covering conflicts around the world, including the wars in Iraq and Somalia. He has also covered the drug war in Mexico, political turmoil in Yemen and Egypt, and gun violence in Chicago.

Putzel joined Al Gore’s Current TV in 2005 as one of its first employees. At the cable network, he co-created Vanguard, an award-winning investigative documentary series that ran for six seasons. In 2006, he was nominated for his first Emmy for his report from Mogadishu, Somalia about the rise and fall of the Islamic Court Union. Putzel trekked in the jungles of the Democratic Republic of Congo to cover the exploitation of child gold miners. He also made the treacherous journey through the desert to cross the Mexico/US border with migrants trying to reach American soil.

Chritof camped on the southern shores of Yemen, where he then discovered the bodies of more than two-dozen refugees who drowned attempting to escape the violence in Somalia.

He has made a documentary, “From Russia with Hate,” about the rise of violent attacks against immigrants in Moscow by neo-Nazi skinheads. The film won Columbia University’s Alfred I. DuPont Award and the prestigious Livingston Award for International Reporting. He got an Emmy nomination for “Lost in Democracy,” a documentary about the first democratic elections held in the tiny Himalayan Kingdom of Bhutan.

After Current TV was sold to Al Jazeera America, He went on to serve as a senior correspondent for the network’s flagship news magazine, America Tonight. There, he dispatched over a hundred weekly stories from 30+ states, as well as Brazil and Iraq. He also hosted a 6-part series about guns in America for the company’s digital wing, AJ+.

Putzel braves those same waters, hunts down inside information and goes on a manhunt across two continents to track down the whereabouts of the missing men.
