A duo Career with BeBe Winanns

In 1981, she first went to Charlotte, North Carolina as a singer on the popular Christian telecast, The PTL Club hosted by Jim and Tamy Faye Bakker. She and her elder brother BeBe became a duo during their time in PTL and produced a version of the song “Up Where We Belong”. In 1984, she and her brother released their first album Lord Lift Us Up, for PTL Records. The duo achieved great success eventually releasing nine Gold and Platinum recordings billed as BeBe & CeCe Winans. In 1984, CeCe left PTL just before getting married, while her brother left in 1985. Their second album entitled BeBe & CeCe Winans was released in 1987.

A Solo Career

CeCe began her solo career in 1995, with her album Alone in His Presence. The album earned her a Grammy Award and two Dove awards while it sold more than a million copies. Also, she earned the Female Vocalist of the Year. Her next work was in 1998, when she released the Gold-Certified singles: “Well Alright” and “Slippin”. She started her own recording company in 1999, PureSprings Gospel. Her first work on her label was the album Alabaster Box in 1999. In the year 2000, she released a concert VHS titled Live at the Lambs Theater in New York. In 2001, she released her next self-titled album, CeCe Winans.

A single from the album “Anybody Wanna Pray” included a guest appearance by GRITS. The second single “Say A Prayer” crossed over into the CCM market. Winans returned to music in 2003, after taking a two-year break from releasing albums. She returned with the album Throne Room. 1000 of the first copies issued with a bonus, contained exclusive interviews with the artist. The 25-city tour Throne Room with the group Anointed in 2004, featured free admission and was followed by a DVD release of the concert recorded in Tennessee. Around September 2004, she experienced what she thought was the flu but turned out to be a serious stomach infection. She was therefore hospitalized immediately for surgery. Because of the extended recovery time, the second half of the Throne Room Tour was postponed to early 2005.

Her seventh album entitled Purified was released in 2005. And Mario Winans (her nephew) was one of the four producers. Her son Alvin III co-wrote several songs on the album and her younger sisters Angie and Debbie performed. Some of her Top Ten R&B radio hits include “Count On Me” a duet with Whitney Houston from the Waiting to Exhale soundtrack. The single reached No. 8 on the Billboard Hot 100, No. 4 on the Adult Contemporary chart, No. 8 on the Billboard R&B Singles chart, and was also certified Gold in the US. On April 1, 2008, she released her eighth album Thy Kingdom Come featuring the single “Waging War”. BeBe and CeCe reunited on October 6, 2009, with an album named Still released by Malaco Records.

Their duo album featured collaborations with Marvin Winans and contemporary gospel singing duo Mary Mary. Winans alongside BeBe and Mary Mary featuring the West Angeles Choir, performed on December 23, 2010, on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. From years 2012 to 2014, she was a judge on BET’s gospel singing competition Sunday Best along with her brother BeBe. She released her tenth album, Let Them Fall in Love in 2017.
