Who is Brian Kemp?
Brian Kemp is an American politician and businessman serving as the 83rd governor of the state of Georgia from January 2019. He is a member of the Republican party and the previous secretary of the State of Georgia from 2010 to 2018. In addition, he was a member of the Senate of the state of Georgia from 2003 to 2007.

Kemp worked as a home builder and developer before joining politics.
Before joining politics, Kemp owned many agribusinesses, real estate companies and financial services. He was elected to the Senate of the state of Georgia in 2002. Following the resignation of Karen Handel, Governor Sonny Perdue appointed Kemp Secretary of State in 2010. Subsequently, he got elected to a full term as Georgia’s Secretary of state in 2010 and then reelected in 2014. In 2018, Kemp raced against Democratic Party Stacey Abrams for the governor seat. During the campaign, Kemp refused to resign as Secretary of the state which brought about controversies and accusations regarding abuse of power.
Kemp was the only state official to refuse help from the Department of Homeland Security to protect him against Russian interference during the 2016 elections. This led to Kemp receiving criticism from voting rights advocates. His office was also involved in the cancellation of more than 1.4 million voter registrations from 2012 to 2018. In addition, Kemp held over 53,000 voter registration applications during the 2018 elections with 70% belonging to African Americans. Before the elections, he falsely accused the Democratic Party of Georgia of cybercrime-related to the elections. However, investigations held in 2020 by the Attorney General’s Office of Georgia concluded that there was no evidence backing the claims.
In 2020, it was revealed that Kemp’s Chief Information Officer signed off a planned security test three months earlier. This was contrary to Kemp’s claims which were, in fact, false according to the new revelation. Kemp was declared the winner in the November 16 general elections with 50.2%. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Kemp banned cities and counties from implementing face mask guidance in spite of advice from public health bodies.

On January 14, 2019, Kemp was inaugurated as Georgia’s governor in Atlanta. In his fight against abortion, he signed a highly controversial law that would prohibit abortion after the detection of a heartbeat fro a fetus. This is usually 6 weeks after pregnancy. The legislation became one of the strictest anti-abortion laws in the country. However, federal courts blocked the legislation considering it to be unconstitutional. Kemp also signed legislation in April 2019 that addressed criticisms that arose from the 2018 elections. The new law demanded that polling locations cannot be changed 60 days before an election. He also announced the creation of “strike team” during his visit to Swainsboro in September 2019 whose purpose was to address economic development in rural areas. In addition, Kemp made a number of appointments including appointing Kelly Loeffler to fill the position of U.S Senate after Johnny Isakson vacated. He also appointed Carla Wong to the Supreme Court of Georgia to fill a vacancy left after Robert Benham retired.
Kemp made an announcement statewide on April 1, 2020, ordering the people to stay at home. He was one of the last governors who gave the order considering the national emergency was declared earlier on 13th March.
