An Amateur Career
He started boxing at the age of 11 as he was trained by his father who also was a professional boxer. As an amateur, he won a South American Games gold medal and tallied a 181-5-5 record with wins over Errol Spence Jr and Esquiva Falcao. He went on and participated in the 2009 World Amateur Boxing Championships, thus winning his first two fights before losing to Jack Culcay-Keth. Moreover, he represented his native Argentina in the World Series of Boxing. There, he accumulated a 3-0 record including a famous win over Sergiy Dervyanchenko who had previously been unbeaten in the competition.
A Professional Career
An Early Career
In September 2012, he made his professional debut months after his win over Sergiy. In his first professional bout, he beat Alejandro Antonio Dominguez with round 4 technical knockouts at Luna Park. He won his first 8 fights, 7 by way of knockout, before being benched because of an arrhythmia that caused several medical compilations. After recovering, he relocated to the United States, where he continued with his winning streak. While in the US, he won four fights over the course of a year.

Castano fought Emmanuel de Jesus in November 2016 for the WBA interim super welterweight title. In round one after knocking De Jesus with a flurry of punches, he went down at the beginning of round 2, this was after across from De Jesus. However, he survived the round as the fight went on. After Demetrius Andrade vacated his WBA (Regular) title, the WBA elevated Castano to regular champion. The WBA shortly thereafter ordered a fight between Castano and WBA (Super) champion Erislandy Lara. But before then, he would face Cedric Vitu on March 10, 2018. He defended his title on March 2, 2019, against former world champion Erislandy Lara. The WBA announced on June 25, 2019, that they are stripping Castano off his belt. This was because he did not sign the contract for a rematch against Cedric Vitu his immediate mandatory challenger. In his next fight, he faced veteran Wale Omotoso. He won the fight as Omotoso declared a shoulder injury that was too painful to proceed, thus awarding Castano the victory.

On July 17, 2021, he faced unified light middleweight champion Jermell Charlo in San Antonio, Texas in a showdown for the undisputed light middleweight championship. Their fight ended in a split draw, Castano’s second in his career with sores of 117-111 for Charlo, 114-113 for Castano, and 114-114 even. After the fight, Castano claimed, ” I felt I was robbed, and I demand a rematch”.

It was revealed by ESPN on November 27, 2021, that Castano and Charlo had agreed to face each other in a rematch. Officially the march was announced on February 8, 2022, and was supposed to take place on March 19. However, on February 17, Castano was forced to withdraw after suffering a slight biceps tear during the training camp. However, the fight was granted sanctioning approval by the WBO on May 3, under the condition that it takes place on May 14. On May 14, 2022, the bout was officially announced and will take place at the Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California. He lost the fight in the 10th round via knockout after being knocked down twice.
