 Who is Brent Pry?

Brent Pry is a well-known American professional football coach and former player. Currently, he is the head coach at Virginia Tech. Pry served previously from 2016 to 2021, as the defensive coordinator at Pennsylvania State University. He was a college football player for the Buffalo Bulls.

Brent began his college career as a free safety at Division III Maryville College in 1988. Later he moved to then-Division III University at Buffalo, lettering in 1990. After suffering a career-ending injury in 1991, he came back as a student coach for the 1992 season.

Early coaching career

Brent started his coaching career in 1993 as the outside linebacker and defensive backs coach for the NCAA Division II East Stroudsburg Warriors. He spent two seasons with the Warriors, where his father Jim worked as the offensive coordinator and mentored All-PSAC quarterback James Franklin and future Penn State head coach. Pry worked as a graduate assistant from 1995 to 1997 with Virginia Tech under defensive coordinator Bud Foster, where he assisted the Holmes to three bowl games. He then spent his following four seasons at FCS Western Carolina University.

Brent coached the defensive line in 1998 and 1999, and defensive backs and special teams in 2000 and 2001. Also, he served as the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) liaison. From 2002 to 2006, he served as the defensive coordinator at Lousiana-Lafayette, assisting the Ragin’ Cajuns to their first Sun Belt Conference championship in 2005. He also molded a defensive line in 2008 into one of the Conference USA’s best as the defensive line coach for the Memphis Tigers from 2007 to 2009.

Brent was a finalist for 2014 Football Scoop’s Linebackers Coach of the Year for his efforts in coaching. He assisted Mike Hull to earn the Big Ten Butkus-Fitzgerald Award, given to the conference’s best linebacker and eight All-America honors in 2014. Hull’s 140 tackles ranked 7th in the nation, led the Big Ten Conference, and tied for fourth-most for a Nittany Lion in a single season. After defensive coordinator Bob Shoop left, Brent was promoted to associate head coach and defensive coordinator on January 10, 2016.

The defense completed the regular season 7th in the country and 2nd in the Big Ten in scoring defense averaging 15.5 points each game in 2017. Pry’s defense completed with a pair of shutout wins and only allowed more than 20 points in a game just three times. For seven times he saw his defense hold opponents scoreless in at least one half of the game (Georgia State, Akron, Northwestern, Rutgers, Michigan, Indiana, Maryland).

2018-2019

Penn State completed with an 11-2 record capped off by a Fiesta Bowl win over the Washington Huskies. In the 2018 NFL Draft, three players were chosen from the defense, safety Troy Apke in the fourth round (109th overall), safety Marcus Allen in the fifth round (148th overall).
