Who is Asa Hutchinson?

Asa Hutchinson ( William Asa Hutchinson II) is an American businessman and a politician, currently serving as the 46th governor of Arkansas since 2015. He is also a member of the Republican Party. In addition, he is also a former Attorney for the Fort Smith-based  Western District of Arkansas from 1982-1985.

Furthermore, he was also a U.S Representative for Arkansas’s 3rd congressional district from 1997 to 2001. Asa also served as Administrator of the U.S Drug Enforcement Administration from 2001 until 2003. From 2003 until 2005, he became the first Undersecretary for Border and Transportation Security at the United States Department of Homeland Security.

Business Career

Asa founded a consulting firm, at the beginning of 2005. The firm was called Hutchinson Group, LLC, however, the firm was in Partnership with Betty Gunman and Kirk Tom. Together with his partners, Little Rock signed a one-year contract with Venable LLP in Washington, DC., as the chair of its Homeland Security practice. Moreover, in March 2006, he ended his contract with Venable LLP and Focused on his gubernatorial campaign. He also focused on his consulting firm in Little Rock. However, after 9month he rejoined Venable.

In June 2006, the Arkansas Democracy newspaper cited that Asas’s $ 2,800 investment in the Fortress America Acquisition Corporation, a company which was being advised by Hutchinson, had worth exceeding $ 1 million, after the company’s previous public offering. Furthermore, the story cited that Asa could not get his shares for another two years. In addition to Asa, six founding shareholders in the U.S. Fortress include Tom McMillon of Maryland Don Nickles, a former U.S. senator, and James Woolsey, a former CIA director.

Early Career

He started his ambition for politics started in 1986 after he decided to run against the time sitting Democratic Senator Dale Bumpers. However, that year was a nationally Democratic Year, and he performed poorly compared to the previous challenger William P. “Bill”.

Furthermore, Asa decided to run for Attorney General of Arkansas in 1990. Asa was competing with Winston Bryant, however, he lost again, though the battle was very tight.

Asa, who had initially decided to run for a vacant seat in Sebastian County’s Arkansas House of Representatives. During the election, he defeated Bill and Hillary Clinton’s longtime friend, Ann Henry, in November 1996. Although Henry spent more than Hutchinson during the campaign.

The strong Republican tilt and presence of his brother Tim assisted him to be on top of the ballot and won 55 percent of the votes. Bush appointed Hutchinson to manage the Department of Homeland Security’s Border and Transportation Security Directorate. In addition on January 23, 2003, Hutchinson was unanimously approved by the Senate. However, she later resigned as Undersecretary of State on March 1, 2005.

2006 election
