Who is Arthur Smith?
Arthur William Smith is an American professional football coach and the current head coach of the Atlanta Falcons of the National Football League (NFL). Smith previously worked as an assistant coach for the Tennessee Titans, and recently as an offensive coordinator, before becoming the Falcons’ head coach in 2021. He is the son of Frederick W. Smith the founder of FedEx.

In high school, Smith was a first-team all-state choice at offensive line, two-time all-conference, and first-team All-Metro. From 2001 to 2005, he was a guard for North Carolina and was a redshirt freshman in 2001. In the 2002 season, he only played in one game as he was diagnosed with a foot problem and did not play for the rest of the season. In January 2003, he had foot surgery and missed out on the whole 2003 season. Smith saw little action in 2004 and 2005. Following his graduation in 2006, he became a graduate assistant for North Carolina.

Early career
Arthur started his NFL coaching profession in 2007, after becoming the Washington Redskins’ defensive quality control coach. He retained the position until 2008. Smith was then hired by Ole Miss in 2010, as their defensive intern and administrative assistant.
Tennessee Titans
In 2011, the Tennessee Titans hired Smith as their defensive quality control coach under new head coach Mike Munchak. He later became the offensive quality coach for the 2012 season. Smith then got promoted in 2013 to the assistant offensive line and assistant tight ends coach. After the 2013 season, Munchak was fired and Smith was retained by new head coach Ken Whisenhunt as the assistant tight ends coach.
Ken was later fired mid-way through the 2015 season and his position was taken by tight ends coach Mike Mularkey. For the 2016 season, Mularkey was retained as the head coach and so was Smith as the new tight ends coach. After Mularkey was fired after the 2017 season, the new head coach Mike Vrabel also retained Smith as the tight ends coach for 2018. Smith was then promoted to offensive coordinator on January 21, 2019, replacing Matt LaFleur. Matt had left the team two weeks before to become the head coach of the Green Bay Packers. In his first year as offensive coordinator, Arthur oversaw the highest-scoring Titans in 16 years. Players Ryan Tannehill, Derrick Henry, and Jonnu Smith had their career years. Arthur was hailed for his play-calling in the team’s 28-12 victory against the top-seeded Baltimore Ravens in the AFC Divisional Round.
