Who is Arthur Gunn?

Arthur Gunn (real name: Dibesh Pokharel) is a Nepalese-American singer-songwriter from Wichita, Kansas. Gunn gained public recognition in 2020 after being a contestant on the 18th season of the singing reality show American idol making it to the Top 7 finalists.

His music is greatly recognized for his “textured, sandpapery” vocals. Artur began his musical career in 2014. This was after moving o live in Wichita, Kansas, along with his family after graduating high school. After his shift to the USA, his music was greatly inspired by bluegrass and country music.

In early 2018, he released his eight-song debut album, Grahan. Gunn also released another album named KHOJ in 2019. Gunn was born Dibesh Pokharel to his parents, Datram and Maiya Pokharel. He also has four sisters among them Rubi, Rupa, and Komal Pokharel. His mother gifted him with a guitar at an early age and he has fallen in love with music ever since.

Her older sisters Rubi and Rupa were a reason he moved to America as they were already going to school in Wichita, Kansas. The three sisters were his biggest cheerleaders and they flew from Hawaii to Los Angeles to see their brother perform live at the Orpheum Theatre on Idol.

He submitted his audition online for American Idol (AI) in 2019. He was later invited to the September 4 in-person Wichita auditions for the third season of the rebooted edition—the eighteenth season overall of the show—at Century II Performing Arts & Convention Center. H was featured in a December 2019 sneak peek for the show, the clip showed a portion of his audition. One of the show’s judges Luke Bryan stated, “I think he might be the biggest star we’ve ever had on ‘American Idol.’”

For the Hollywood week, Arthur was shown in the “Singer-Songwriter” category of the Genre Challenge, alongside Julia Gargano and Marna Michele. He sang “Hard to Handle” by The Black Crowes. Afterward, the judges told him he advanced alongside Julia. For his final solo performance, he sang his own version of “Have You Ever Seen the Rain?” by Creedence Clearwater Revival. He was later placed in the same deliberation room as Jonny West, Sophia Wackerman, Franklin Boone, Makayla Phillips, Kimmy Gabriela, Francisco Martin, DeWayne Crocker Jr., Cyniah Elise, and Lauren Mascitti, where it was revealed that everyone had advanced.

He passed onto the Top Forty and advanced to the Showcase round performing for a live audience—including his parents and sisters—in Kapolei, Hawaii at the Aulani resort. Arthur became the show’s Topp 7 contestants which was determined by viewer votes—and the judges were given a one-time Judges Save which they used to add an additional singer.

Among those eliminated on the 10th May show were Jovin Webb, Grace Leer, Sophia James, and Makayla Philips. Those who made it to Top 7 were Gunn, Louis Knight, Julia Gargano, Jonny West, Just Sam, Dillon James, and Francisco Martin. The remaining seven contestants were asked to perform Disney songs and a song dedicated to their mothers. Arthur performed “Kiss the Girl” and Hey, Ma.
