 Who is Arik Armstead?

Arik Armstead is a recognized American professional football defensive end for the San Francisco 49ers of the National Football League (NFL). Armstead played college football at Oregon and was drafted in the first round of the 2015 NFL Draft by the 49ers.

College career

Arik played in all 13 games as a true freshman in 2012, making one start. He completed the 2012 season with 26 tackles and a half-sack. During the spring Armstead joined the Ducks basketball team, where he redshirted his first year. He played in 13 games as a sophomore in 2013, recording 15 tackles and 1 sack. During the spring he re-joined the basketball team. Armstead then played in one game prior to quitting to focus on football. He went back to the football team in his junior season in 2014.

Professional career

The San Francisco 49ers picked him in the first round (17th overall) in the 2015 NFL Draft. He was the 4th defensive end picked in 2015.

2015 season: Rookie year

He was not able to attend training camp and organize team activities until Oregon’s school year had concluded because of the NFL’s policy that prohibits rookies from joining teams until their year is officially completed. He competed for the job as the starting defensive end against Darnell Dockett, Glenn Dorsey, Quinton Dial, and Tank Carradine after it was left vacant because of the retirement of Justin Smith. Head coach Jim Tomsula named Arik the fifth defensive end on the depth chart to start the regular season, behind Quinton Dial, Glenn Dorsey, Tank Carradine, and Tony Jerod-Eddie.

He then made his NFL debut in the season-opening 20-3 win over the Minnesota Vikings. During the game, he posted one tackle for loss. Armstead recorded 3 combined tackles and made his first NFL sack on quarterback Carson Palmer for a 4-yard loss during the 47-7 road loss to the Arizona Cardinals in Week 3 of the season. He then collected a season-high six combined tackles in a 29-13 defeat by the Seattle Seahawks in Week 11. In Week 17, he received his first NFL start and made a solo tackle during a 19-16 overtime win against the St. Louis Rams. He completed his rookie year with 19 combined tackles (14 solos) and 2 sacks in 16 games played with one game started.

2016 season

The 49ers hired Chip Kelly as their new head coach, who was also Arik’s head coach at Oregon. He competed to be the starting defensive end after Glenn Dorsey was moved to nose tackle. He then competed against DeForest Buckner and Quinton Dial. Kelly later named him and Dial the starting defensive ends for Week 1. In the season opener against the Los Angeles Rams, Arik posted his first sack of the season on Case Keenum during the 28-0 shoutout win. He recorded a strip sack on Tyrod Taylor which was recovered by former college teammate DeForest Buckner during the 45-16 loss in week 6 over the Buffalo Bills.

The 49ers then placed him on injured reserve with a left shoulder injury on November 8, 2016. After a week, Armstead had surgery to repair the injured shoulder. He completed his 2nd season with 15 combined tackles (9 solos), a forced fumble, and 2.5 sacks in 8 games and 4 starts.

2017 season

Arik recorded his first and only full sack of the season on Russell Wilson during the 12-9 road loss to the Seattle Seahawks in Week 2. 2018 season

The 49ers picked up the fifth-year option on Armstead’s deal on April 30, 2018. During Week 3, he posted his first sack of the season on Patrick Mahomes during the 38-27 road loss over the Kansas City Chiefs. He then recorded a season-high five tackles and sacked Jared Goff once during the 39-10 loss to the Los Angeles Rams in Week 7. In the following game, he sacked rookie quarterback Josh Rosen once during the 18-15 road loss against the Arizona Cardinals. Arik completed the season with 48 tackles (33 solos) and 3 sacks in 16 games and starts.

2019 season

During the season-opener over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, he recorded his first sack of the season on Jameis Winston during the 31-17 road win. After two weeks, he forced a fumble on James Conner which was recovered by DeForest Buckner late in the 4th quarter to assist seal a 24-20 victory against the Pittsburgh Steelers. The season went on to be a breakout season for him. Armstead recorded 54 tackles (31 solos), a team-leading 10 sacks, 2 forced fumbles, and a fumble recovery in 16 games and starts. He ranked second on the 49ers regarding tackles for loss.
