A Career at The Grampian Years
Mackenzie at the age of 20 in 1981, became a trainee journalist. For fourteen years, she reported and co-hosted the regional TV station’s news program North Tonight. North Tonight throughout the eighties was replaced by Summer at Six during the summer months with a brief news summary and Anne was involved in the news output during this period. In the mid-eighties, she hosted the political show Crossfire. Also, she was involved in Grampian’s coverage of the 1988 Piper Alpha disaster. She interviewed the then prime minister Margaret Thatcher in 1989, from Grampian’s Dundee studios. Mackenzie during her time at Grampian Television was nicknamed ‘the duchees’ for being the top female at the television station.
A Career at Switching Channels
In 1995, Anne was recruited by the BBC. Her first presented edition was on Wednesday 6th December 1995, in Scotland’s national news program, Reporting Scotland. She went on to host every Wednesday early evening broadcast. Also on BBC Radio Scotland, she presented Good Morning Scotland three mornings a week. Her bosses offered her another night fronting the nightly broadcast.
She now had two-night roles, every Tuesday and Wednesday night. She continued her work with BBC Radio Scotland and also brought political shows including Cross-Examination.
