Who is Amanda Gorman?

Amanda Gorman is an American activist and poet whose work is mainly aimed at issues dealing with feminism, oppression, race and marginalization. Her work also focusses on matters involving the African diaspora.

Gorman actually became the first person to receive the title of National Youth Poet Laureate. In 2015, she published a poetry book titled The One For Whom Food is not Enough. Recently, during the inauguration ceremony of U.S President Joe Biden, she delivered a poem called ” The Hill We Climb”.

Amanda Gorman’s Career

Gorman mentions that she first gained her inspiration to become a United Nation’s Youth delegate in 2013. This was after watching a speech by Malala Yousafzai who is Pakistan’s Nobel Prize laureate. In 2014, Gorman also received the name youth poet laureate of Los Angeles. Later in 2015, she published a poetry book called The One for Whom Food Is Not Enough. Then in 2016, she founded One Pen One Page which is a non-profit organization that serves as a youth writing and leadership program.

In 2017, Gorman became the first writer to get featured on Book of The Month of XQ Institute. She also wrote Nike’s tribute to black athletes as well as signing a deal with Viking Children’s Books to write two picture books for children. Gorman opened the literal season for the library congress in 2017 thus becoming the first youth poet to take the role and also read the poem on MTV. The poem was titled In This Place: An American Lyric which commemorated Tracy K. Smith’s inauguration as Poet Laureate of the United States. In addition, the Morgan Library and Museum purchased her poem and in 2018, they displayed it close to Elizabeth Bishop’s works.

In April 2017, while still at Havard, Gorman became the first person to receive the name for National Youth Poet Laureate. She won this title against four other finalists. Also in 2017, she received a grant worth $10,000 from OZY media company in the OZY Genius Awards which is held annually. Gorman also mentioned in the same year that she intends to run for president in 2036. Glamour magazine selected Gorman as one of College Women of the Year in 2018  where she says that she wants to join politics so as to inspire others. In 2019, The Root magazine selected Gorman as one of their Young Futurists which is a list of 25 best and most brilliant young African Americans who excel in various fields such as art, culture, social justice, science and technology.

Gorman recently delivered a poem titled The Hill We Climb during the presidential inauguration ceremony of Joe Biden on January 20, 2021. She became the youngest poet in United States history to read to present at a presidential inauguration. Both of Gorman’s two latest books rose to top place in sales on Amazon soon after presenting her poem at the inauguration.
